Cancelling Carroll’s contract achieves absolutely nothing

Andy Carroll’s incredible injury woes have again given rise to the cry among many for his contract to be cancelled!

It’s a natural emotional knee jerk reaction with people fed up that he is never available and he doesn’t help himself when saying things like: “I hope I get a full pre-season ” following the game in Switzerland against Winteruhr.

That simply doesn’t wash given that we now learn from the official site that he apparently remains uncomfortable with his ankle problem for which he underwent what everybody believed was successful surgery.

Now it seems that was an illusion, that he will be missing for three months minimum. Thus the “cancel his contract” shouts have started from the totally fed up!.

But here’s the simple truth surely: Doing so would achieve absolutely nothing.

There remains the chance that he will be fit to return by Christmas, come off the bench, score some goals and make some sort of impact before we finally – and it has to be said,  happily – see him disappear into the sunset this time next year.

Carroll is on around £3.5 million a year and were the club to attempt cancelling his deal they would probably want him to take about half of that.

But truth is he has no need to accept and any attempt – which hardly seems worthwhile anyway – would fail and achieve nothing even were it to happen for some bizarre reason.

Whatever the reasons for his continuing injury problems, whatever his state of mind contract cancellation goes nowhere and achieves nothing.

We have lived with this one since Allerdici made him his must have player all those years ago and we are simply gonna have to swallow it for another nine months.

  1. As i said on previous post.if he had anything about him he would offer to rip up the remaining year on his contract.im sure he would survive finnacial without the money as he has been paid enough during his several rehab sessions
Another club may take a chance but i feel he is finnished as a premier player if not for good.
Get a job coaching or something in football but your playing days are over he needs to face the facts as he breaks down after coming back EVERY time.harsh but there you go

  2. I wouldn’t say it achieves nothing, that’s not entirety true.

Being one of our biggest wage bills, it would free that wage up for someone else.

I’m not saying its what we should do, but just pointed out it does in fact achieve something.

    • I’m pretty sure we would have to pay the remainder of the contract if we cancel it, thus the sum would by no means be freed up at all. Better to pay for someone who can impact, than paying said person to leave.

  3. So it seems that we are prepared to pay him the best part of £1m on the pretext that there is a “chance” he may be fit by christmas. And if he’s not fit we carry on paying him?

  4. Hugh , I don’t think anyone in ther’er right mind would deny that a fit AC is great asset to have . He has constantly showed that when fit he is a game changer . Unfortunately for West Ham the persistent injury problems are not helping us in the long run . Personally I wish he would get fit and stay fit . I have always backed Big Andy , as I am sure most on this forum are well aware . The mystery for me is why the Medics can’t sort it out . Hopefully by Christmas we will be in a strong enough League position to welcome him back . But as strong as a Carroll fan I am , I can’t see him lasting much longer in a West Ham shirt if he can’t put his injuries behind him . It hurts me to say it and it saddens me .
Hope Wilshere turns out ok . As for Winston , only time will tell .

  5. It has been obvious for a long time that he intends to see out his contract, much as I like to watch a fit Andy Carroll terrorising defences from set plays we have seen that for only a small fraction of his time with us, we have to let his contract expire then he can try to get one elsewhere or stay on a pay as you play contract.

  6. We might be able to sell him in January at a better price. There will be a few teams desperate to avoid the drop and a fit proven goal scorer like Carroll is a risk worth taking to a team like that. No doubt when we eventually do sell him though he will come back and score a Hat trick against us, and go on to have a fantastic injury free season, maybe even get called back up to the England squad on the back of it.

  7. A fit Andy Carroll is indeed unthinkable.
