Gold announced on his twitter account “I can now officially confirm that the Club has today agreed a fee of £25m for the transfer of Dimitri Payet to Olympique de Marseille. dg” after news broke yesterday on the French man leaving.
He then confirmed a sell on clause which is believed to be 25% by saying: “There is a sell on provision. dg”
Defending the decision of the board to sell their star player Gold said: “We don’t want to sell DP but we had no option after he publicly declared that he didn’t want to play for WH dg” & “The decision to allow Payet to leave was in accordance with the wishes of the manager and the interests of squad unity. dg”
He later replied to Talksport radio presenter Andy Goldstein asked: “Why do owners (not just u) say a player “Won’t be sold” before selling him?”
Gold replied:“We genuinely didn’t want to sell DP and hoped to resolve his issues but slowly things got worse culminating with him refusing to play. dg”
Gold then told his 171,000 followers: “West Ham UNITED Football club is stronger today than it was yesterday. dg”
So Dumb & Dumber claim Payet is not for sale then sell him for only 25m, which is a massive markdown from the 40m being quoted since before the end of last season. So its a great deal really, just because it was the only deal on the table now D&D didn’t have to grab it with both hands. At the end of the season I’m sure a better price was attainable, but that would have eaten up D&D club income.

Fact – D&D ran Birmingham on a shoestring and sold it to Hong Kong businessman Carson Yeung, for £81.5M, then in June 2011 Yeung was arrested on charges of money-laundering. So who can honestly say D&D won’t do the same with West Ham to whoever wants it providing there’s a big fat profit in it.
Fact – D&D repeatedly claimed Payet was not for sale and WHU didn’t need to sell him. Instead we now sell him for a knockdown price of 25m when only 6 months ago he was worth 40m, that’s one hell of a discount and questionable business nous.
Fact – It was the only deal on the table in this window as most clubs prefer to spend before the start of a season, which leads me to believe WHU would have seen a much better return had we sold him at the end of the season.
