How we rated the Irons v Cheltenham

RiceAdrian: Never seriously troubled but no alarms and looked as good as we have seen Hart so far this season 6

Byram: Growing up fast – defended well and always looking to get forward and make things happen 7

Collins: A rock at the back missing nothing. Named official mom and a top performance from the Birthday Boy – 34 years young 7

Ogbonna: More than adequate after a couple of worrying games – this will have done his confidence good 6

Masuaku: Often find myself with heart in mouth and lucky not to have had a spot kick awarded against him – very unpredictable individual 5

Noble: Great pass for the goal and won some free kicks. No complaints about the skipper tonight 6

Fernandes: Solid and effective without ever playing a killer ball – competent sums him up 6

Rice: Colossal performance in first half and although not quite at same level second this boy is truly something else and surely set up as a first team regular when available 8

Obiang: Adequate game – did nothing wrong at all – and looks to be well on the way back after that bad injury 6

Ayew: Started slowly but raised his game after the goal although still needs to show more composure and vision on the ball. 6

Sakho: Took his goal well and set up the second. Worked really hard throughout until subbed. A fit Sakho will make a terrific difference to ths side 7

Subs:

Hernandez: Took over from Sakho after 63 mins and showed us all we are becoming used to – pace vision and skill 7

Kouyate: Great to see him back, came through with no problems and always looking for the ball 6

Quina: Late arrivalĀ No rating

  1. I thought of the two fullbacks Masuaku shaded it but would have given them both 7, Rice I think looked less effective when Kouyate came on only because Kouyate was occupying the spaces that Rice was playing in until he came on. Rice is class agree with the 8 rating looked composed and assured at all times and read the game like a seasoned pro, if worse comes to worse and we don’t get Carvalho play Rice there for the rest of the season.

  2. I don’t know if we are doing Rice, or ourselves, any favours raving about him – but it is hard not to. I am just going to try to keep a balance but I was so impressed at his strength for an 18 year old. He was brushing big guys off the ball like they were the kids. Also his decision making- never looks rushed & unlike so many of our players in recent years he doesn’t often waste the ball. With most of our players when they have the ball in our half I want to close my eyes, but I find myself thinking all the time ‘give it to Rice’.

  3. Lets hope Cresswell can get back to the form of 2 seasons ago because at the moment this could become a problem area.

    • 2015/1016 Cressie was brilliant but that injury hasn’t looked the same.
But Masuaku for all the stick he gets is great going fwd and really good in wingback role

  4. I like to see Adrian start with a back 3 @ Newcastle (tho with Harts Wages they won’t want to bench him) but Adrian Collins Rice Ogbonna
Like to see Rice back at CB w Kouyate back and can play in middle so he can come.out and make some great passes.
Would like Byram on Wingback as well. Not sold on Zab and don’t think has legs for Wingback.
But it will be a back 4 with Hart Zab and wouldn’t be surprised if he plays Kouyate CB. But Collins should start.
Need an another Leftie CB swap out for Fonte

  5. Noble should be of set pieces give Rice a go think he takes a nice set piece
