Maiga mess ahead of Hammers!

maigaWest Ham’s hopes of offloading Modibo Maiga to Metz permanently look dead.

With the French club bottom of League 1 the chances of a deal being done for the striker are as unlikely as it gets leaving the board with a big dilemma.

Having scored just six goals in 38 appearances for the Hammers, the forward has managed four in 17 games with his loan club – hardly eye-catching stuff.

And his near certain return to Upton Park will be a sharp reminder of life before the new policy of more board control over signings with the Davids being forced to offer him a pay-off.

The 27 year old is on £40k a week – or £2 million a year – and before leaving for Metz was offered an Irons pay-off of around £2.5 million which he turned  down.

A Hammers source repeated today that an offer was likely to be made to the Mali-born forward telling ClaretandHugh: “We’ll try to get something done but he’s a strong willed boy and turned down everything we offered last time.”

  1. Just like any other job in life performance should dictate pay. The rules are somewhat different in football, certainly once the contract has been signed. Have a couple of good years, sign a 6 year $60,000 a week contract and all your worries are over.

I can’t believe this doesn’t happen more often. When you are dishing out contracts that set people up for life the incentive to maintain form will not be there for many players. Until clubs collectively get wise and start paying basic plus starting, win, goal, assist etc. bonuses it will continue. But with over $5b being shared among the top clubs in the country they now have even more money than sense.

  2. We are going to pay him what ever so let him clean the toilet and mow the grass if he won’t take a pay off,
If the 2 Daves do make a major mistake and give BFS a nother 2 years take the 2.5 million off his salary,

  3. some you win and some you lose. Sakho and Cresswell being ones we have won, Maiga and Diarra being ones we lost. What the latter two won’t realise yet, until their careers are over, is you only get a few years to play the game. When you are too old you don’t get a second chance. Ok you have gone from rich to richer but they will never get that time back. That my friends is their cum-uppance.

  4. His stats aren’t that far off Andy Carrolls, but a lot less costly….
