Marseilles are back in

payetcityClaretandHugh understands that Marseilles have finally come back with a new offer for Dimitri Payet.

The French club have edged their offer – the third – up to close on £25 million but the Irons are still holding out for £30 minimum.

It is becoming more likely that a deal will be done than not as negotiations continue although Marseilles believe they remain in the driving seat as the only club the player will apparently join.

There’s little question, however, that whilst the Hammers urgently want rid of the Frenchman with the manager allegedly pushing for early closure on the issue, they see £30 million as the lowest possible benchmark price.

However, there is nothing certain as the club feels cheated by the backdrop to the negotiations are being conducted with the French club getting a player who under other circumstances would cost closer to £40-£45 million.

With the situation as it is, there’s little question talks are likely to go right down to he final day of the window with the Irons keeping the pressure on for the right deal

  1. Can’t see us getting 30 in all honesty, get rid for 25 and free up the wage bill. Get Hogan + 1 more and I’ll be a happy man.

  2. For me it’s matter of principle now, 30 million quid is our minimum price now, still a very fair price in todays market. Just because Payet has allegedly already agreed terms with them behind our backs shouldn’t give Marseille a discount.
If they want their marquee signing, at least pay what is a minimum bottom end of marquee level money.
Otherwise we keep him and try again when more clubs might be interested in the summer and Payet may be more open to a move to another team that does not play in Marseille…

  3. Right on Double H. Cant figure out why some fans are so eager to give in to Payet by sending him on his way to Marseilles. Let him rot in the reserves, unless and until he leaves on our terms.

  4. A short while ago, our Mr Sullivan valued Payet at £50m. To sell him now for £30m is ‘giving him away’ – an offer of less than that is derisory.

    • Agree TRB its a no brainer, sooner or later Payet will have to leave if he has any ambitions with the national side, Marseille are bankrolled by a billionaire so that 25 – 30m is always going to be on the table, we have no need to rush into a decision and the chairmen know that. I can’t see Payet ever playing for us again but you never know with a genuine grovelling apology and some humility anything might be possible, at the moment we are on the back of two good wins so he seems very dispensible but if we hit a brick wall or especially against the top teams in the division you need a player like a Payet or you need a lot of luck to win those games, I think we are playing great as a team without him against lower quality opposition but we are lacking star quality and that bit of magic. The city game now is the acid test, lets see what we can create against them and how good we are without the ball glad to be looking up the table again COYI !!!

  5. How do you solve a problem like a Payet….
Marseille know he is going to go. I’d just like to see someone have the balls to accuse them of tapping up. If EUFA want to clean the game up, check players and agents phone records etc. Payet knows how much he’s going to be paid, how long the contract is etc. ALL behind West Ham’s back, without permission. I’d settle for 25, but love us to hold out and rinse them for more. That said, we’ll make 100/150% profit on a 29yr old.
But, Hogan and Fonte for 20/23mill dont’s = Payet

    • exactly Munchie, in reality Payet is a £40- £50m player, for us to replace his quality though would £100m be enough, it wasn’t at Spurs to replace Bale, they might be doing well but if they win the League it will be mostly down to industry rather than magic, I can’t think of a single goal they scored where I said wow which is also another reason I don’t see us threatening the top 4 at present or anytime soon, against the best teams we are lacking in conditioning, we are also lacking a system to produce consistent results, its as plain as the nose on my face if Slav changes that then maybe he will fullfil his and our potential I would love to see it. I think if we were as fit as Chelsea, Tottenham, Liverpool and City and pressed in the same way, we would be in the top 4 – 6 even without Payet, we have players athletic enough and young enough to do it but too often we are reliant on set plays to create, we moved the ball a lot quicker from the highlights I saw against Boro maybe the greasy top helped but I have been saying all season when we move the ball quickly we mobilise the crowd which in turn leads to better performances, we are all mobilised behind Slav, the team and against Payet presently so hopefully we can keep that rolling until the end of the season COYI !!!
