Marseilles ‘split’ spells trouble for Payet

West Ham look like having an easy decision to make over the sale of Dimitri Payet if latest reports turn out to be true.

New speculation claims that Marseilles are refusing to go above £25 million for the player which is nowhere enough for the Hammers.

We have been told that £23 million has been offered and rejected and it seems highly unlikely that the French club will raise it by the minimum £7 million being demanded by the Hammers.

And it is now being reported there is a split amongst Marseilles officials with some wanting to abandon the pursuit who at one time carried a £100 Hammers million price tag.

Others remain to continue but it would take a huge amount of pride swallowing for the Hammers to sell him for a quarter of the fee placed on his head by David Sullivan in the summer.

West Ham have a problem not dissimilar to Marseilles’ in that our board are under pressure to sell the mutinous midfielder from the manager and squad whilst there’s an obvious desire to get the best price posssible either now or later.

However, unless there’s a big change of heart from Marseilles it seems unlikely that the Irons will give way leaving Payet to sweat it out until the summer following what would become the worst possible advice from his advisers.

  1. Stick to your guns The Daves!

£30m minimum and Payet submits a transfer request so that he doesn’t get 10%. Failing that – Let Payet stay but don’t involve him with the first team squad. He won’t get called up for France either if he isn’t match fit.

  2. Something will give in the last couple of the days of the window i expect.I just dont want to make it easy for him,let him sweat a bit,he could do with losing a few pounds 🐖😀

  3. Trouble is that his value is now at a high point (it was higher before his histrionics) and will only reduce once this transfer window is closed (wherever he is in February).
Its now mid season and he clearly isn’t training sufficiently; he appears to be carrying a good few excess pounds which he will struggle to quickly shed and gain match fitness from and, no matter how cynically I may view him, this entire episode must be weighing heavily on him psychologically.
There are some players who would move on quickly, and positively (in a playing sense) from a situation like this – but I can’t see him having that strong a will.
I hope that the Board do sell him during this window – for the best deal possible. It would, in my view, be a failure of management to still have him on our books in February as he won’t be worth anywhere near £20m come summer – and the squad and supporters would have to put up with this soap opera as a probable distraction rather than being to build on the recent positive performances.

  4. The board must stay firm & not blink Marseille are trying to buy on the cheap so they can use the difference for Payet’s wages there is no way he would go to Marseille unless they were paying him more than West Ham. They should start making his life uncomfortable by fining him for every little contract infringement so he will then put pressure on Marseille or even take a pay cut to force the transfer.

  5. Ain’t been much of a distraction so far has it? In fact it seems to have had a positive effect on the squad and brought them much tighter together. If we give in now it opens the way for all disgruntled players to do the same as slug. Why let him get his own way like a petulant child, telling us where he’s going to play? Why let him off easy?
