Mayor puts London Stadium decisions on hold as he jets off

mayorDecisions on the London Stadium will need to wait until next year after the London Mayor jetted off to India hours after he made an announcement he was taking over the former Olympic Stadium.

Sadiq Kahn’s held media interviews on Friday in which he repeatedly blamed his predecessor Boris Johnson and made digs at West Ham for getting the deal of the century and saying he didn’t blame them for looking a gift horse in the mouth. He then jetted off for a six-day tour of India and Pakistan.

Despite the image of the Mayor riding in on a white horse to solve the stadium financial problems, the truth is that the London Mayor was already the 65% majority shareholder of the London Stadium before Friday and has done little to resolve the problem during his time in office despite having the option to wade in.

It will be the London Legacy Development Corporation (LLDC) which will make decisions as they have done for many years. Their CEO David Goldstone is due to leave the organisation soon to join the MOD with a successor yet to be announced.

Claret and Hugh understand that no meeting between the London Mayor and West Ham United has yet been scheduled and begs the question whether Friday’s announcement was all about show to put pressure on West Ham to do the right thing.

A social media poll of 725 West Ham fans reveals that 78% believe the club hold their nerve to defend their existing contract while 22% believe they should renegotiate the agreement to give a fairer deal to taxpayers who are subsidising the stadium.

  1. well out of the so called 725 fans polled the 22% that said we should negotiate
a better deal for the tax payer obviously weren’t west ham fans. why wouldn’t you get the best deal for your club. Blame Levy and Hearn for costing the tax payers not the club who got mugged off. this subject is boring and pointless, the only solution is give us ownership. but believe me the chairmen will make you pay for the privilege of the mistakes made by the govt and the ioc.

  2. The report did not make a single criticism of West ham in its 169 pages; in fact it said we had done nothing wrong.

    • I am talking about the London Mayor’s media interviews but actually, there are also slight digs in the report too that West Ham took advantage and that they asked for the seats to be no further away than 16.9m from the pitch.

      • I didn’t see that as a dig, only stating the facts. They put themselves in a position where we had bargaining power. As the report says, they could have asked us to come back with another offer in exchange for naming rights, income from concerts and other events, which would have brought them more income and transferred some of the financial risk from the taxpayer to us.

      • So Sean what is this “right thing” that you think West Ham should do? You should choose your words more carefully, unless of course you think the club are in the wrong.

  3. Never mind about this crap , Moyes is starting with Antonio up top and Fernandez in m/f !
Suicide IMO ! Lambs to the slaughter , why not sakho ?
