Merson: This would be a decent Hammers season

paul-merson-2Paul Merson belives a mid table finish and a good Cup run will be a decent return for us in our first season at the London Stadium.

The former Gooner – writing in The Star – decared that the Boleyn was a fortress for the Irons last season saying: “It was a hostile place to go. The fans were right on top of you. Now they’re miles from the pitch and the atmosphere ain’t great.

The fans were a 12th man for West Ham at Upton Park. They’re not now. Arsenal had the same problem going into the Emirates.

They used to call Highbury the ‘Library’ but the Emirates was worse. It’s still quiet. It was always going to take time for West Ham to get it right and they need to be patient with the team and the manager.

I think the owners know they have got a good boss in Slaven Bilic. They’ve had a bad few weeks but if they finish mid-table and go on a cup run I think that’s a good return for West Ham in their first season at their new home.”
