Nortveidt departs the Hammers

NordveitHavard Nordtveit today left West Ham United having completed a transfer to German Bundesliga side Hoffenheim for a fee reported to be £5m.

The midfielder, 26, returns to Germany a year after leaving Borussia Monchengladbach to sign for the Irons on a free transfer.

Nordtveit played 21 games in all competitions for the Hammers but the move never really worked out for the Norway international.

He joins Gokhan Tore and Jonathon Calleri whose loan deals were not renewed by the club at the close of the 2016/17 season.

Hammers boss Slaven Bilic said: “I would like to thank Havard for his commitment and hard work last season. He is an excellent professional and we wish him all the very best at Hoffenheim.”

  1. A shame in some ways as he only played in his proper position at the end of the season, when he looked ok.
He will be remembered for the spuds disaster, though.

  2. Good luck to Havard with his new club. I’m sure we didn’t see the best of him at West Ham, as he was often played out of position. We got him for free and sold him for £8m (allegedly) …..so that has to be good business.

  3. the intensity of the english game was obviously difficult for him to adjust to. He played a good few in his favorite position, but he played most of the previous season at centre-back in a 3. That position was not new or foreign to him ( I saw him on my cable tv play there for Gladbach ), but the couple he played at right-back were.
He improved late in the season, but I think Bilic had already made up his mind.
Same could yet happen to Feghouli, who also improved late ( perhaps too late ).

  4. Is it me?? BUT i’m getting a bad feeling about this window !! Starting to think it could be worse than last year??

    • I am also a bit worried about not getting the right strikers in the end, but as long as we don’t get all those stocking fillers again, it would be an improvement lol.

    • Its early days but I am equally nervous as you about it FF whatever happens I hope we don’t end up splurging more money on potential we already have enough of that unless it was Tammy Abraham of Chelsea if the way he played for the U21’s the other day is how he usually plays he looks a good prospect.

  5. Another midfielder played at right back who plainly wasn’t suited.

Had a couple of decent games in his position late on but I think the Liverpool game was the final straw.

On reflection was brought in for a European campaign that never happened. Glad he’s gone and gives the younger players some hope.

    • True about the European campagne and now he is surplus anyway. Also think Cullen should be pushed forward, even if he won’t get too many chances.

  6. Gotta say IM GUTTED HE DIDNT REALLY GET A CHANCE ST ALL.

  7. Shame because he’s obviously got something. Unfortunately always be remembered for the penalty he gave away at the Spuds after being brought on to shore up defence. Felt he had more to offer.

  8. Im all indifferent about it.I couldnt see him getting much time in the first XI next year again so it is a move that suits him im sure.Lets put it this way i wont be losing any valuable kip over it.

  9. Bilic only played him in his right position once, he was never given a proper chance – who knows how good he is?

There’s talk of using Cullen with the First team this year – they’ve freed up the place in the Squad and Nordtveit’s wages.

I get the impression that things are being done on the cheap, I hope I’m wrong!

  10. Lol Michael so it is a no win then.Give the youngsters like Cullen a chance and it is doing it on the cheap or bring in signings and we aint giving the youngsters a chance 😂😂

  11. I guess its another sign that Noble will be first choice again this season despite not being very good as a defensive midfielder, its impossible to judge Nordveit as we all are saying but I did watch him playing in his favourite position in preseason and he looked good despite none of his team mates being on the pace he was the most energetic player in the team, like has been said by others if he wasn’t going to be in the first team might as well sell him for his own good as well as the clubs, best of luck to him.
