Reid contract talks top Irons agenda

Reid       Exclusive by Hugh Southon

West Ham United are ready to sit down to talk a new deal  with central defender Winston Reid as a “major priority”  as soon as the season ends.

The Hammers defender will have a year left on his deal in the summer with an option and Claretandhugh has learned the club are determined to do everything in their power to tie the player down to another long term deal.

It will take priority over the Ravel Morrison talks as the major issue to be settled by the club’s negotiators.

Reid was last season’s Hammer of the Year and it’s no coincidence that the team’s big slump into relegation trouble coincided with his absence with an ankle injury 12 weeks ago.

The team kept six clean sheets from the 10 games in which he featured but since have managed four from 17 and have shipped goals at an alarming rate.

Club insiders admit they are aware of interest in the player and made it clear they want the New Zealander to commit for four years.

Claretandhugh were told by a senior source: “We are acutely aware of Winston’s position. A new offer will be made to him which truly reflects his worth. It’s a situation we wanted settled quickly at the end of the season.”

  1. Is it beyond the club negotiators capabilities to handle more than one contract at a time? I would have thought that with Karen Brady in the boardroom, multitasking would have been something that we would excel at.
