Sakho and Song up for top award

Sakho celebratesIrons Diafra Sakho and Alex Song have been shortlisted for the English Premier League African Player for October with the winner set to be named om November 1

Awards director Tunde Adelakun described Sakho’s progress as a great rise from seeming mediocrity saying: “Diafra Sakho has made the shortlist all three months of the season so far.

“His penchant for goal scoring has been rewarded, and his story is that of a great rise from mediocrity .

“Brought in from French second tier team Metz for just over £3million, Sakho has settled in to West Ham, and has broken a record at West Ham, becoming the only player to have scored in six consecutive Premier League games; including a winning goal against champions Manchester City.Songs
Song has proved an invaluable acquisition for the Hammers, being rock solid in the middle of the park and earning a few man-of-the-match accolades with his ability and effort since he arrived.”

Swansea’s Wilfried Bony, 25, has also made the shortlist

  1. English Premier League African Player for the Month Award? Really?? Should we have one for North Americans? Latin Americans? Asians? European Player of the Month? Would that be PC? How about English Player of the Month? Maybe not, excluding foreigners might give rise to accusations of racism. Perhaps, English Premier League Ginger Haired Player of the Month, open of course to natural gingers as well as the dyed variety?
The League is a melting pot, with players from all over the world contributing to their club’s endeavours. Why should there be any award that is exclusive only to players from a certain region? It is pointless, wrong and smacks of a double standard.
