The London Stadium will be considered as a venue for the 2019 World Cup, if it is found suitable for staging cricket. The England and Wales Cricket Board have been asked by the International Cricket Council to suggest high-capacity venues.
London Stadium, which has been considered for T20 matches by county side Essex, would have to be able to accommodate a playing surface large enough to host international cricket.
It would also need to be available, but with the tournament running from 30th May to 15th July it would be before the Premier League football season.
A London Stadium 185 spokesman told Claretandhugh:
“London Stadium is a multi-purpose venue that has hosted a world class spectrum of sporting events including London 2012, Premier League Football, the Rugby World Cup, International Rugby League, Race of Champions and major music concerts.”
“We are in the process of conducting in-house feasibility studies to explore whether or not London Stadium has the potential to host additional sports.”
“We are conducting these studies independently and we have no agreement in place with the governing bodies in control of allocating events.”
“Our ambition to stage a prestigious and diverse event calendar continues to gather pace and we look forward to hosting Premier League Football, IAAF World Champinship Atheltics, World ParaAthletics, The Anniversary Games, Depeche Mode, Robbie Williams and Guns N’ Roses in 2017.”
