£30M for midfielder? They’re having a laugh

Leeds look to pay £30m for flop midfielder Phillips

One of the more ridiculous transfer reports this morning suggests that on-loan midfielder Kalvin Phillips could be on the verge of a mega-money move in the summer.

The suggestion is so preposterous that I originally put it down to an April Fools’ joke. However, it appears the report is deadly serious, although I can’t rule out someone having a wicked sense of humour.

Because Leeds, according to The Sun, are reportedly keen on the midfielder and believe £30m could be enough for him to seal a reunion. Once labelled ‘The Yorkshire Pirlo,’ Phillips was the former captain of Leeds United and signed for Manchester City for £50m.

His awful stint at West Ham has followed 18 months of inactivity under Pep Guardiola, which has seen him lose his England place.

Leeds United is in second place in the Championship, and if they do get promoted, then perhaps a move for Phillips could happen. However, his footballing stock is currently so low that even £10m would seem an unlikely amount.

My guess is that he will have to get a loan move with City subsidising most of his wages.
