Like the rest of the Irons faithful ClaretandHugh’s top analyst is hoping the team’s early season form will encourage the central defender to stay at the club.
He believes the lengthy delay means nothing more than the player is studying all his options – which is a sensible thing to do – and that he could still sign a new deal.
But he warned: “Although £60k a week is a huge amount of money it’s still cheap at half the price for West Ham because to replace him would cost a lot more..
“My reckoning over a four year deal is that he would cost £10 million ish. To get somebody as good in you are going to pay something very close to that plus the same or more in a transfer fee.
“There’s also the fact that he knows the team and the club inside out and backwards and is widely respected. I hope he signs and it’s too early to give up hope as some may be doing.
“Keep the faith.”
