With reports that Manchester United are readying a bid of around £50m rising to £60m for Mateus Fernandes, Claret & Hugh believes this will dismissed by West Ham.

West Ham know that any sale of Fernandes triggers a 15% sell‑on payment to Southampton, on any profit meaning a huge chunk of the fee disappears. That alone makes low offers a non‑starter.
Then comes the Jorge Mendes factor. With Fernandes represented by Mendes, any buying club must budget for a full package, commissions, bonuses, player‑side fees that pushes the total cost well beyond the headline transfer number. If a club wants Fernandes, they must pay a fee that justifies the entire financial ecosystem around him.
Real Madrid, PSG, Arsenal and Manchester United have all registered interest. David Moyes at Everton was also reportedly interested yet has walked away given the acknowledgment of the clubs involved and the transfer fee which the player will inevitably fetch. This isn’t a one‑club chase it’s a Champions League‑level market.
Fernandes is 21, under contract until 2030, and despite the clubs relegation will only be sold for their valuation. With multiple giants circling, a sell‑on clause biting into profits, and Mendes shaping the deal, West Ham’s £80m stance is not only firm, it’s logical.
£80m is fair. I’ll stick me neck on the block and say he is as good if not better in a lot of areas that Rice. If he is going to go to a bigger club then it needs to be one that can afford £80m….. or stay.

Have had an idea… Can we not shave Fulkrug, dye his hair, then send him to MU and say “okay, you’ve talked us round, here’s Fernandes. He might look a little out of shape because he let himself go over the summer to try and get over his disappointment about relegation and not being picked for the WC. But he’ll be fine after a training session or two. Now give us the £60M and let’s move on”. I think it could work…
I personally just don’t believe they’ll hold out for £80m be honest. Whoever is in charge. Heard this all before. Was going to sell Payet, Kudus and several others for a lot more than what they did. They end up bowing to the pressure of the other side. Only exception was Rice.

wouldn’t the sell on clause only apply to the profit above the £40mill we paid , otherwise if we sold him for the £40mill we originally paid we’d have to give Southampton another £6mill which means we’d lose money & be paying part of the same original transfer fee twice ? ?
I doubt we will get £80m, i just can’t see it. Probably Around £65m.
