Southampton are eyeing a formal January transfer bid for West Brom goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, who has also been reported as a target for the Hammers.
The Irons were heavily linked with a move for Johnstone in the summer and even tabled a bid.
However, they could not agree a price with the Baggies and eventually opted to sign Alphonse Areola on loan from PSG instead.
His deal expires at the end of the season, though, which is also when Johnstone’s contract comes to an end.
As a result, the Hammers have been reported as being interested in a free transfer for the England goalkeeper come the end of the season, along with Spurs.
But The Express and Star now reports that Johnstone is also attracting interest from Southampton.
The Saints are said to be preparing a bid for the goalkeeper in January as they look to get a jump on both the Irons and Spurs in the race.
Albion, as a result, will have to decide whether to cash in or try to negotiate a new deal before the summer, and it may force the Irons into action in January too.
