Winston Reid stands out as one of New Zealand’s most notable exports in English football, with an impressive ten-year career at West Ham United that earned him respect from peers, coaches and fans.
New Zealand isn’t well-known for producing Premier League players, but Reid was a favourite in the New Zealand sports betting circles as he shared his unique journey to English football with the world. Sadly, injuries hampered Reid’s career and by 2021 he had parted ways with West Ham on a mutual agreement. He left behind a legacy that most fans believe is irreplaceable. His departure left a void in the team’s defence which has yet to be filled. And this has raised the question: Will another New Zealand player be able to follow in his footsteps to the Premier League, and eventually, West Ham?
New Zealand has produced several successful international players, including players in England’s League One, France’s Ligue 1, and Australia’s A-League Men. However, not many have broken into English football’s top league, with only Chris Wood currently playing for Nottingham Forest.
Reid’s success is a driving force for young talent in New Zealand, and as local sports infrastructure continues to grow and more players get scouted for international clubs, there is potential for another standout player to emerge.
