Reports linking West Ham with yet another move for Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson really do have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
Yesterday, Claret & Hugh were informed by a top source at the London Stadium that, while Wilson is a fantastic player, he is “too injury-prone.”
Realistically, that should be the end of it, but the rumour and speculation surrounding the Hammers’ bogeyman never stops. The fact that Wilson is now available on a free transfer will only add further fuel to the stories, but common sense should prevail in this instance.
New West Ham manager Graham Potter and his right-hand man Kyle Macaulay are clearly looking to the future, and one can’t imagine them sanctioning a move for an injury-prone striker at the end of his career.
Comparisons have been made with Glenn Murray, who thrived under Potter at Brighton, but the two signings are not the same. The Seagulls were a very different club when Murray signed for them in 2016 and nowhere near able to recruit the type of player West Ham can now.
The Hammers’ most likely striker signing is the one currently here – Evan Ferguson. And if the Hammers wish to supplement him with an experienced striker, then there is no reason why Niclas Füllkrug, Michail Antonio, or both couldn’t do that job.
Quite what Potter himself thinks about the latest round of nonsense is anyone’s guess.
When media has a model to create content that gets clicks and they can be monetised these rumours will always be common place and recycled.
Wilson is a typical Sullivan signing. If we sign him, all this recruitment team business is just window dressing (again).
Does anyone really believe Antonio will ever play in the Premier league again, if he recovers fully from the broken leg he will be closer to 35 , great player he has been but we need younger fitter players now
Another injury prone player we might as well keep Fullkrug on the bench as another one in his warm seat Far too much money has been wasted on cheap deals as they sit on the bench on extortionate wages
For once I actually agree with you, Annette Curtain!
