A strange story of Yaya Toure and the Irons

Yaya_Touré_2013-06-06_001A bizarre Telegraph online story is tonight claiming that the Irons are keen on Manchester City veteran Yaya Toure and that we may make a move for him given his free signing status this summer.

In a piece claiming the club have no intention of sacking Slaven Bilic and will back the manager big time in the transfer market, the piece says: “Toure is soon out of contract at City and is yet to agree on a one-year contract extension, with West Ham emerging as a viable destination for the 33-year-old Ivorian.

“It remains to be seen whether they are prepared to match Toure’s wage demands, should he leave City, but given he would be available as a free agent a deal could be struck. Toure’s future is expected to be decided soon.”

What isn’t explained by this extraordinary suggestion is why the Hammers would want to sign a player approaching his footballing dotage when they already have one on whom he has modelled himself and is five years younger….Cheik Kouyate.

Indeed the Hammers have little interest in addressing the midfield where the likes of Kouyate himself, Mark Noble, Pedro Obiang, Manu Lanzini, Edmilson Fernandes and Havard Nortveidt are available.

The Hammers are instead looking for a new goalkeeper, right back and a cutting edge up front – a strange story indeed!

  1. Blimey I thought Chelsea were the Pensioners. At this rate I have got a chance of a game…

  2. I have a feeling there is some truth in this, its not the first time we have been linked with him but as you say in the article I can’t see what he is going to give us and he is reportedly on well over 200k a week at City let him swan off to China along with our very own Porcelain wonder.

  3. He would think he is too good for us. If he came he would be trouble. Great player but not now, not for us.

  4. Can’t believe that I just read we don’t need Yaya as we have Noble- amongst others. Really?!

  5. Lol Pablo, yeah the guy is past his best but since he got back in the Citeh team he seems to have been quality.Non-story though really imho.

  6. Don’t think you did just read that Pablo!
