The wonderful Paulo Di Canio has been talking to Sky Sports News about David Moyes. He praised him despite a poor Premier League campaign and believes he should stay at West Ham amid the Celtic links.
But Di Canio has also made it clear that Moyes will know the team has to improve following a season which saw them suffer 20 league defeats before a late revival saw them escaping the relegation jaws.
He said: “He deserves it, because he was in trouble this year.
“That was because in the league the team didn’t perform to the level they could. Because they spent a lot of money. But over the last two years they’ve built (towards) this victory in the cup.
“Of course we all expected more in the league, but it’s not every year you have the chance to win a cup so it’s amazing.
“The job (he has done) is amazing. But it’s obvious, even Moyes knows, that next year the team have to perform much better.
In my opinion they should stay with these kind of players – of course we will probably lose (Declan) Rice and maybe bring in a player for a similar role – but we have to finish always top eight, because this is the quality of this club.
“And Moyes is capable to do this.”
The ex- West Ham hero then revealed he wore his old Hammers shirt from his playing days and a claret and blue scarf when he watched the final with friends.
And he says there was also a West Ham crest on the wall where he watched his old club beat his compatriots.
“We were celebrating because it was an emotional night, I’m very happy because the West Ham supporters are amazing,” Di Canio added.
“They are waiting for more than 50 years (for another European trophy) so it was (about time they had the chance) to celebrate. I’m very happy for all of them.
Oh and a big word of thanks to the cute Harry Redknapp for making Paulo who brought him to the club after that ban and made him a Hammers legend,
Love to hear from our great maverick Paulo, heart on sleeve, so West Ham, and fittingly brought to us by magic Harry, our talisman. Such legends of the club.
Paolo Di Canio has always been good value whatever the subject of his comments! I’d bring him in as a tv pundit anytime. What’s he doing now?
Love Paulo but I’m going to be a bit more negative for once. Finishing top eight is a target not an expectation. Not something we should be doing but something we’d like to be doing. Doing it two years running under Moyes is an over achievement. It’s also going to be harder in future You’ve got the traditional top six plus now you have two of the richest clubs in the world in Newcastle and Aston Villa. In the future the most the best of the rest can hope to achieve will be finishing in ninth place making it very hard to achieve European football. So unless some multi billionaire comes in and buys our club we should make the most of these 3 years running of European football because who knows if maybe we’ll never see the likes of it again.
