Academy star ready to step up

|

West Ham United Academy star Callum Marshall is good . . . and I mean seriously good. He’s the leading goal scorer in Premier League 2, and netted a brace in the EFL win against Bristol Rovers.

In fact, the Irish striker has scored a whopping 11 goals in six outings for the under 21 team so far this season.

Jarrod Bowen’s goal against Brighton Hove Albion was rightly lauded following the 3-1 Premier League win. However, Marshall’s third against Bristol Rovers was arguable better. Both goals required an exquisite first touch and a deadly finish, but the youngsters was from further out.

West Ham’s coaches are rightly trying to keep expectations of the 18 year old at a manageable level. Therefore they are not prone to making lofty statements about any players ability. Fortunately, I’m not under the same restrictions, so I’ll say it as I see it . . . Callum Marshall is the best left footed finisher I’ve seen since Robbie Fowler.

Academy star ready to step up: Callum Marshall is training with West Ham’s first team.

The young prodigy has recently signed a new deal with West Ham, and the club are rightly crowing about it. In fact, only yesterday they posted pictures of Marshall training with the first team, which must surely be a good sign.

Whether he will feature in the League Cup is another matter. As Hugh reported earlier, David Moyes is leaving many senior players in London ahead of the cup clash. But if Marshall does get his chance, don’t be surprised if he takes it with both hands.
