Nayef Aguerd’s loan move to Real Sociedad marks a sensible decision for both the player and West Ham. After struggling to hit his best form since his high-profile €35m move in 2022, Aguerd found himself slipping down the pecking order under Julen Lopetegui. With West Ham investing heavily in central defenders over the summer, the writing was on the wall for the Moroccan international.

As was revealed yesterday, the club began the window with high expectations and quoted Lyon a whopping £37m which was completely unrealistic. West Ham were not the only ones living in an alternate reality either, Aguerd himself seemed to holding out for an offer of a Champions League club which just never arrived.

From Aguerd’s perspective, the switch to Real Sociedad offered a chance for revitalisation even if it wasn’t his preferred choice. LaLiga’s more tactical and less physically demanding style could suit his game.

For West Ham, loaning Aguerd out was the right call. Rather than keeping an expensive asset on the bench, the club has opted for a practical solution that benefits all parties. With Lopetegui focused on integrating new defensive signings, Aguerd would have struggled to get the minutes he needs to regain his confidence. By allowing him to move on, West Ham avoids unnecessary squad friction and potentially positions themselves for either a revitalised player next summer or a profitable permanent transfer. With any luck, the central defender will enjoy a good season and increase his value but getting close to the valuation of £37m is just fanciful.

The transfer deal may not have been what Aguerd or The Hammers wanted, but it was the best and only pragmatic solution left.

A better balanced presentation , but don’t be too sure that his valuation by W.H. is fanciful thinking , he is playing well for his country at present. I will remind you when it is established. R.R.R.
