Aguerd on his way back after Morocco defeat
West Ham‘s Nayef Aguerd will be on his way home after Morocco were knocked out of the Afcon tournament this evening 2-9 by South Africa.
And he was held partly responsible for one of South Africa’s goals when charging out of position and failing to get anywhere near the ball.
After cruising through their group matches Morocco were among the favourites to go on and win the competition but it was never to be in a game which saw them beaten 2-0 by the South Africans.
It means that the central defender may be available for the match at Manchester United although it is more likely he will be given a little time off and return for the match against Arsenal next Sunday.
His national team were fully expected to win this evening and enter the quarter finals but two second half goals from the Springboks via Makgopa (57′minutes), and Mokoena (90’+5minutes) were enough to end their hopes. It was a huge shock as the South Africans went on to set up a quarter-final against Cape Verde.
Manchester United midfielder Sofyan Amrabat was dismissed in stoppage time before Teboho Mokoena curled a classy free-kick past Bono to confirm the upset in style.
Just for the record the South African rugby team have the nickname The Springboks the football team are known as Bafana Bafana (The Boys)
