In any other sport, such stark statistics would signal the end for the coach. Worst record in the league for headed goals conceded. Most goals conceded full stop. Six goals conceded from corners already (compared with eight in all of last season). But the millions required to terminate Potter’s contract means he hangs on, standing on the touchline without a plan, without a response, knowing he shouldn’t be there but refusing to walk away for several million reasons.
Reported on bbc.co.uk ex-Newcastle goal keeper Shay Given put it bluntly:
“Everyone said judge Graham Potter when he’s had a full pre-season and a chance to get his own players in, but there’s been no improvement,” he told BBC Sport.
Seeing the stadium half empty in the second half, just like it was against Chelsea, will worry the West Ham hierarchy.
“Tomas Soucek’s red card didn’t help but that is six wins and 11 defeats in 22 league matches for Potter. They’ve started so poorly. Will he be given more time? I’m not sure.”
BBC Journalist Gary Rose:
“Aside from the alarming number of goals they have conceded, it is also the type they are letting in… Despite bolstering their defensive options, that has been the main concern for the Hammers this season.”
The graphic provided shows West Ham’s terrible defensive position: More goals conceded than Wolves, Brighton, Brentford, Burnley, Leeds.. the very clubs the Hammers are now challenging for the bottom three slots. It needs stopping, and it needs stopping now.
Whatever the cost. And ‘deep-in-thought-Potter on the touch line’ is just waiting for the Hammer to fall instead of doing the decent thing which would have happened in a long-lamented bygone era. Potter won’t walk. Get it over with. It’s the kindest thing to do for the club and for Potter himself.
Looks like Wee Davey was not quite as bad as everyone said.
Reply to Shay Givens comment: It’s not Potters team (only partially) Sullivan refused a number of wanted players.
Chose his own aged/Injury prone/free agents resulting in no substance in attack.
Potter has some obsession with JWP like Moyes ha with Soucek must play them regardless of status.
Literally the only free manager we can get that would be any good is Mourinho but sully wouldn’t dare because he’s be put in his place.
Potter gets sacked and Dyche or Steve Cooper walks in…
Roll up, Roll up, the Sullivan Carousel of crap managers is back in town !!
Potter should have enough balls to realise he is out of his depth and walk! and so should the “Lady” who hired him, she is well out of her depth in all that is football as hiring him shows!! And our CEO ( D o F) should follow on close behind!
Potter is not cutting the mustard and shows no sign of doing so. That will be what undoes him the only question is how long will Sullivan dither.
Arsenal and Everton away are not likely to be pretty, just imagine the Arsenal corners routine. Palace at home, we’d need to improve out of all recognition to the Tottenham performance.
Imagine what the stadium will look like in the championship…twenty thousand at best in a huge bowl that is not and never will be “A WORLD CLASS STADIUM” and when the board have to start using there own money because of the ruinous way they run the club well they will not stay around for long.
“It’s the kindest thing to do for the club and for Potter himself.” Can’t argue with that. Potter is either a can short of a six pack or a very stubborn g*t. We and possibly half the football world can see JWP is not fit for purpose but he refuses to drop him. Is he deliberately trying to get sacked by being an obstinate mule? He seems to have taken the Lopetegui playbook and even outdone it for sheer stupidity. Nice guy but enough’s enough. Time to go already. Gardening leave beckons. Happy wife, happy life!
Exactly what Hammeroo said, with a few more expletives!!
