All quiet regarding West Ham’s Celtic ‘wonderkid’ | And here’s why

Back in January, West Ham were linked more times than I can care to remember with Celtic’s teen prodigy Daniel Cummings. With no other signings to focus on – don’t we know it – the reports abounded that young Cummings would be likely guaranteed game time and straight into the seniors. The youngster had just played against ‘Villa in the Champions League and West Ham were in the box seat for his signature.

And then it all went quiet. Celtic wouldn’t part with him early, West Ham wouldn’t increase their bid – so Cummings stayed put. And sat cooling his heels. However last week came the report from the Daily Record – reported by footballfancast.com that former Hammers target Cummings would be departing in the summer. But nothing from West Ham. Curious.

Why has it all gone so quiet? Without claiming to have any inside knowledge on this topic – Id suggest two words: Callum Marshall.

Callum Marshall-West Ham-Northern Ireland

Callum Marshall – ready to show Graham Potter what he’s all about

The West Ham youngster has turned into a ‘loan star’ who has been wowing them up at Huddersfield and has been voted the Terriers’ player of the year. The end of his loan spell and a return to London Stadium for the 20 year old pretty much obviates the need to bring in another teen starlet: After all, Kamrai Swyer and Gideon Kudua have been pretty prolific in the u21’s so – what would be the point of paying (small) but good money for another teen talent?

Presumably Callum Marshall will be at the head of the queue for that ‘Freddie Sears’ – type young talent on the bench role. Along with other midfield prospects George Earthy and Freddie Potts, Marshall will be returning with a spring in his step and a point to prove. Which makes it a fascinating pre-season. Never has a pre-season been so welcome – if only to wipe out the memory of 2024-5!

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970.. Don't take my comments too seriously, imagine we are having a chat at half time over a pint at L S and "let's disagree without falling out".

If he is available on a nominal fee we will be signing him, it’s poor form to talk about players while they are still at other clubs. He looks a good prospect and there isn’t really any sign that those other players are ready to make the leap.

    thank you

“for the 20 year old pretty much obviates the need to bring in another teen starlet” All of our eggs in one basket is the way to go?

How about snapping up Daniel Cummings, improving his profile and then having the heartbreak of allowing him to move on to Arsenal for £150 million? Or just take him for what is seen in him at the moment and giving him the chance to show us what he’s got.

    COYI

  • Paul Basnett says:

I haven’t seen him play but by what others say at this end of the market where the risk is low get him in anyway if we can? He’s younger and done more already than some of our prospects. With no big money to spend this is exactly the type of player to get in.

  • Vince says:

Leaving out the fact this article is insultingly short on actual research and knowledge, didn’t Cummings sign a pre contract agreement in February? Meaning he’s an actual west ham player come the summer. Google says: yes.

And if Google knows, you should know.

    • Brad says:

This was also confirmed by Ex that he had signed the pre-contract. Of course the Club can’t announce that until he signs the full contract, hence the silence.

Don’t let’s all get fooled into thinking all out young players will be able to play at premiership level .
It takes time and a lot of talent to play at that level .
From what I have seen Earthy has been in and out of the Bristol City team , mainly on the bench .
Marshall has scored single figures in league one , while playing wide .
Dan Potts has potentially the best chance of making the premier league cut , but then I remember a certain Josh Villen who we loaned out every season !!
We really don’t want to build false hopes that young players who have done ok in the lower leagues are suddenly going to be top premier league players – sadly it just doesn’t happen like that .
More strange for me is why Lewis Orford hasn’t been even put on the bench ?
Sadly , and I did say it on here after 10 games , Potter is a Southgate clone , who will always play it safe .
Just listening to the guy that’s so easy to see .
Unfortunately our chair likes those kind of managers .

  • Potterbegone says:

When potter first arrived I thought this guy might actually be what we have been looking for as he gave Scarles his debut. But he then drops him, picks him again and after a really difficult half against one of the worlds best left wingers he seems to have been hooked permanently which has probably destroyed the lads confidence,
This guys win rate is so pathetic he could have at least given some of the kids some game time along with giving Guilherme, who never gets a look even though kudus has been poor this season. What is the reasoning not to they couldn’t have done worse.
These players won’t get a chance under this fool

    • B says:

      I thought Scarles was injured?
and I thought he made his first appearance under Loopy?

As far as confidence being ‘destroyed’: If this were true, he’s not cut out to be a professional footballer.

Maybe Potter will be ‘the guy’, if he’s given some time to bring in his players and scheme. But he’s working with an unbalanced, ageing, and discontent squad (Which we all seem to agree needs a massive turnover!)

After Man U game, he will have every reason to try out the youngsters, fingers crossed.

  • David Mahon says:

I have watched the boy and i think that he will be a prolific goal scorer at the top level in 2 years everyone will start taking notice of this boy.

  • Keith says:

Agree about Marshall, great prospect, but your comment about Kodua is puzzling – he’s been on loan at Wycombe and hardly getting any game time.

  • Dan says:

I thought he signed a pre contract with them.
If he didn’t then why is he not being used? His scoring record runs rings around any thing Idah has ever or will ever achieve playing in our system.

Now the title race is over, let’s see some youngsters get a chance to show what they can do.
