All weekend football called off

|

All English, Welsh and Northern Irish football and professional Scottish football has been postponed this weekend as a mark of respect following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Ten Premier League and six Scottish Premiership fixtures were scheduled.

Sources inside the club had told ClaretandHugh they expected the games to be called off as a mark of respect following the Queen’s death.

EFL games were due to take place on Friday and Saturday, with six Women’s Super League fixtures – the first of the season – on Saturday and Sunday.

England’s National League, FA Trophy and grassroots football is also off.

The Premier League took the decision to honour the Queen’s “extraordinary life and contribution to the nation” and said updates on future fixtures during the period of mourning “will be provided in due course”.

The league’s chief executive Richard Masters said: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.

“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”

ClaretandHugh says: The correct decision of course although oddly after King George’s death in 1952 there was a full football programme and the monarchy was probably a far better respected institution then than it is today. Be that as it may. the late Eliabeth 11’s 70 year reign is a quite extraordinary achievement and there could never be any doubt that the PL would decide that this week’s fixtures needed to be cancelled.

In the circumstances, it would have been good to have got this right. Elizabeth 111? That’ll be Elizabeth II.

No matter what our personal views or differences are this is absolutely the right decision . As a mark of respect to the queen who has served us so admirably .

  • Budgie says:

I think this decision is wrong as we showed on Thursday night that we can play a match and fully respect the Queen. Her life should be celebrated by supporters coming together
to show our respect. All other sports are continuing with the approval of Goverment and our King.
