West Ham have announced that Michail Antonio is available on a free transfer… sort of.
As Claret & Hugh exclusively revealed yesterday, the club and our record Premier League goalscorer are locked in something of a stalemate.
In shortâand to save you scrolling through countless pagesâWest Ham have offered Antonio a “pay-as-you-play” deal until he proves his fitness following last yearâs serious car crash. The player and his representatives are instead pushing for a more permanent deal and reportedly have offers from elsewhere.
The impasse has now led to an official club statement as part of the Premier Leagueâs retained list process:
“Given Michail Antonioâs unique situation, following his serious road traffic accident in December 2024, there will be no formal decision and announcement on his future until such time that it is considered right and appropriate. However, as his current contract is also due to expire on 30 June, for the purposes of the Premier League Retained List procedure at the end of the 2024/25 season, Michail will be listed as a free transfer.”
From the outside looking in, the statement appears to be both a technicality and a subtle messageâpart declaration of intent, part public negotiation.
The club clearly want to do right by Antonio, but age and injury concerns make a full contract a significant financial gamble. With a one-year deal potentially costing over ÂŁ4m, the club are understandably cautiousâespecially while publicly pleading poverty.
Antonioâs recent social media post, showing his inspiring recovery from learning to walk again, was emotional stuff. But whether thatâs enough to sway West Hamâs bean counters remains to be seen.
The door isnât closed, but itâs clear the club arenât moving their position. Watch this space.
Reading too much into this situation.
I don’t think he has anything more at Premier League level, best for all concerned that he moves on to a level where he may have something to offer.
I don’t see him as an equivalent of Ogbonna for obvious reasons.
No problem with the clubâs position on this. Itâs too early in his recovery to do otherwise.
