West Ham have announced that Michail Antonio is available on a free transfer… sort of.

As Claret & Hugh exclusively revealed yesterday, the club and our record Premier League goalscorer are locked in something of a stalemate.

In short—and to save you scrolling through countless pages—West Ham have offered Antonio a “pay-as-you-play” deal until he proves his fitness following last year’s serious car crash. The player and his representatives are instead pushing for a more permanent deal and reportedly have offers from elsewhere.

The impasse has now led to an official club statement as part of the Premier League’s retained list process:

“Given Michail Antonio’s unique situation, following his serious road traffic accident in December 2024, there will be no formal decision and announcement on his future until such time that it is considered right and appropriate. However, as his current contract is also due to expire on 30 June, for the purposes of the Premier League Retained List procedure at the end of the 2024/25 season, Michail will be listed as a free transfer.”

From the outside looking in, the statement appears to be both a technicality and a subtle message—part declaration of intent, part public negotiation.

The club clearly want to do right by Antonio, but age and injury concerns make a full contract a significant financial gamble. With a one-year deal potentially costing over Ā£4m, the club are understandably cautious—especially while publicly pleading poverty.

Antonio’s recent social media post, showing his inspiring recovery from learning to walk again, was emotional stuff. But whether that’s enough to sway West Ham’s bean counters remains to be seen.

The door isn’t closed, but it’s clear the club aren’t moving their position. Watch this space.

Reading too much into this situation.

  • John Ayris says:

I don’t think he has anything more at Premier League level, best for all concerned that he moves on to a level where he may have something to offer.

I don’t see him as an equivalent of Ogbonna for obvious reasons.

  • Barry Clipsham says:

No problem with the club’s position on this. It’s too early in his recovery to do otherwise.
