In a recent interview with The Daily Mirror, West Ham forward Michail Antonio has shed light on the often-secretive world of player transfers, revealing how he finds out about potential moves and his approach to such situations.
Despite joining West Ham in 2015 for just £7 million, the 34-year-old has attracted interest from other clubs throughout his time at the London Stadium. He even admits to coming close to leaving on one occasion, with a club exceeding West Ham’s asking price last summer. However, the Hammers ultimately decided against selling him.
Antonio’s close relationship with his agent plays a key role in managing transfer interest. His agent acts as a filter, informing Antonio only about opportunities that could truly motivate him, so as not to disrupt his focus on playing.
Antonio acknowledges the changing landscape at West Ham, particularly the club’s recent tendency to target younger, pacy strikers contrasting with his own style. He perceives this through transfer rumours and the types of players the club brings in.
The veteran forward highlights how different managers, like Manuel Pellegrini, David Moyes, and Slaven Bilic, have varying philosophies that can impact his role on the team. He emphasises the importance of fitting into the manager’s vision.
With his contract expiring this summer, Antonio’s future at West Ham is in question. However, both he and the club have the option to extend it for another year. His recent goalscoring form might make him a valuable asset to keep around for the upcoming season.
If only he could concentrate on football and leave the podcast ****e alone.
Spend his studio time practising his one-on-one technique.
Ever seen him go up against a keeper and score? Nope, me neither.
Leeds away 1-1 , no problem.
Antonio has been one of my favourite Hammers in recent years.
On the pitch, he’s an absolute handful for defenders, works hard and has the ability to create something out of nothing.
He could probably work his his goal-scoring when 1-on-1, but hey.
I hope he stays and can contribute to the teams success in 2024/5.
