Antonio ‘West Ham can get into the Champions League’

|

SportMichail Antonio has revealed he wants to play in the Champions League and believes he can do so with West Ham.

In an interview with WHUFC.com he said:

“I’m a very ambitious person, one thing I want to do is play Champions League and me signing this contract now, in my prime years, is showing that I believe West Ham can get into the Champions League spots. I believe that we can push on and that we can be involved in the top four and that is my mission and something I’m hoping we achieve.”

“I’ve always known West Ham as a massive club with a massive fanbase. When I went to the Boleyn Ground, I was very surprised it was only 35,000 holding there because I was thinking ‘where are all the rest of the fans?’ Everywhere I’d go, I meet West Ham fans – doesn’t matter where I’ve gone, Dubai, Japan – wherever I go there is West Ham fans there! “I knew we definitely needed to double the capacity and moving here was definitely the best decision we’ve done.”

Wants to play in the CL. Wants to stay at West Ham. Can this be done?

lets hope he don’t get picked for a drugs test.
    typical club PR machine interview,
ok Mikey, were going to ask these questions, and this is the reply you must give.
maybe throw in, “don’t forget too renew your season tickets folks”

You are a cynical man Nigel 🙂 I actually think Antonio is right, we could finish in the CL places. The PL is as average as I can ever remember it, we have already beaten comfortably the top two teams in the league Tottenham and Chelsea (in the cup), there is nothing special about, Arsenal, Liverpool, Everton or Man Utd so why shouldn’t we if we buy well and play games with close to the intensity we showed against the Spuds ? I am not saying I think it will happen just that we have a team capable of it.

We could get into the CL. I would settle first for us being a side that can honestly aim for top ten every season rather than 40pts. One problem is that for so many of the players CL is their big ambition. So it is a Catch 22- you can only get into the CL with top players, but they won’t come until you are in it.

A lot can be achieved with players who are just below the top level if they are all committed & play as a team. We hit that standard against Spurs, but you have to be at that level for most of the season.

Agree with most of that 64, imho we should always be challenging for Europe rather than just top 10, we are very much a work in progress, I certainly wasn’t negative about last summers window and I still think that in the next couple of years it could prove to be one of our best windows, most of our players have a lot of improvement left in them, Cresswell, Byram, Adrian, Obiang, Fernandes, Ayew, Antonio, Lanzini etc to name a few, if they continue to improve we can really push on with some good purchases COYI !!!

  • Hammer64 says:

Yes 32 I think last year’s window has looked better as the year went on. It is easy to criticise & most of us- me included – have done that. I suppose the bad ones were really bad.

Well if you include Europa League in ‘Europe’ that is obviously possible for us! But I think CL much less so. How do you hold on to the outstanding players. None of them are going to wait if you tell them we will be there in three years or whatever. But I can’t blame people for aiming high. But progress has to be gradual. I don’t think there is any danger of the Davids breaking the bank & taking silly risks.
