West Ham United seem intent on making Maxwel Cornet the latest casualty of David Moyes’ reign, with reports suggesting they’re open to offers for the winger. This shortsighted decision disregards Cornet’s potential and disregards the fresh start a new manager can bring.
Cornet arrived with a bang, his goal-scoring exploits at Burnley convincing the Hammers to invest in him. Injuries and a lack of faith from Moyes, however, left him on the fringes. But judging a player on such limited opportunities is a flawed approach.
West Ham are now embarking on a new era under Julen Lopetegui. The Spaniard is known for his tactical flexibility and ability to get the best out of his players. Shouldn’t Cornet be given a chance to impress the new boss before being discarded?
Cornet’s talent is undeniable. His pace and attacking prowess could be a valuable asset under the right manager. West Ham risk throwing away a potentially valuable player before he’s even had a chance to shine under Lopetegui.
The club should focus on building a squad around Lopetegui’s vision, not simply clearing out those who didn’t fit Moyes’ mold. Giving Cornet a clean slate could prove to be a masterstroke. Writing him off before the new era even begins is a decision West Ham might well come to regret.
Well as our transfer ventures seem to have come to an end already we should be giving new contracts to the likes of Cornet,Johnson and Mubama otherwise we’ll be playing 5 a side next season
What potential? Sounded good on paper on the pitch rubbish, just another name from the bargain basement?
I think Cornet was not given a fair crack over last 2 seasons, yes he was injuried for some of that but not all.
He needs game rhythm and a run in the side. I’m surprised he wasn’t utilised up top more.
Cornet is yet another failed moyes signing! Let Lopetegui decide which players he wants and which formation he wants to play! In lopetegui and steinden we trust COYI
Players a sick note. Just look at his injury record the last few years. Out for half a season with a calf injury that he had to go and live in France with? He’s had Knee problems, Hamstrings, ankle problems, hip problems Hip problems, Muscle problems, Heel problems. Leg injuries, arch problems, and was once out due to an allergic reaction.
I’d argue most of those were a “Moyes” problem. The donkey had his favourites and mugged off the rest. His injury record pre Moyes was not an issue
With Emerson under consideration by AC Milan, and not the ideal player as an overlapping fullback anyway as he tends to cut inside, the logical thing to do would be consider Cornet.
He played as an attacking left back at Lyon, and won plaudits in doing so…winning the position as first choice left back in the process.
Seems strange to me we wouldn’t consider him in the same position for us, particularly given the demands Lopetegui places on his full backs to be predominantly attacking and add width.
JLo hasn’t yet officially begun work – let us give him a chance to look at the players and decide who he wants to keep
