Areola heartbreak

Alphonse Areola will be coming back to West Ham with a World Cup silver medal after Argentina beat France on penalties to win the biggest trophy in our sport.

Areola did not play a minute at the tournament, as he is the backup to their captain Hugo Lloris.

He had to watch on from the bench as Argentina won the trophy in a shootout after one of the greatest games of football ever played.

The game ended 3-3 after extra time, as France threatened to stage a remarkable comeback.

Argentina raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria and held that lead at half-time.

Kylian Mbappe, though, scored twice to force extra time and give Les Bleus a real shout of retaining the trophy they won in 2018.

Messi scored again in extra time, but Mbappe was once again the man to equalise, forcing penalties, and becoming the first man to score a World Cup final hat-trick since Geoff Hurst in 1966.

Argentina won 4-2 on penalties, scoring all of their kicks, while Kingsley Coman and Aurelien Tchouameni missed.
