Yesterday’s clash against Manchester City saw West Ham’s goalkeeper Alphonse Areola substituted at half time and replaced by Lukas Fabianski for the second half. With only Wes Foderingham for cover at the club naturally the alarm bells started ringing. Lopetegui shed some light – but not much – on the situation in his post match interview.
Speaking to BBC Sport Lopetegui confirmed that Areola had been substituted through injury, although unclear at what point this was sustained. He did collide with a post at one stage in the half – hopefully he won’t be out of action for too long.
Lopetegui commented:
“He had one problem in the half with his back. That’s why we changed,” he said.
How long he will be out of action remains to be seen but fortunately for The Hammers at least, (If not for Areola) the injury has co-incided with the international break so the Frenchman may have time to recover and get treatment before his club need him next on 14th September. More news on his condition will come from the club shortly.
This isn’t an update as you’ve told us what we already knew last night.
If Areola misses a game West Ham are adequately covered – nobody is worrying!
