Aston Villa 2-1 West Ham
Fabianski:4 Nothing to do until he caught a ball after 30 mins. Made his first save in the 68th min. Fumbled a scrappy shot from a corner which never should have been awarded as West Ham tired after 70 mins. Poor goalkeeping and officiating made it 1-1.
Wan Bissaka:7 Seemed to be playing on the right side of a back three but still managed to venture forward. Adjusted well to the positional change once Summerville departed.
Mavropanos:5 Commanding in the air. Did well against Watkins but was bamboozled as Villa went 2-1 ahead on 74 mins. Very silly error shorty afterwards as recent thrashings started to play on the defenders minds.
Kilman:6 Untroubled in the first half, one drilled long range pass to Scarles was particularly impressive. Excellent block from Baily. Will be disappointed will Villa’s second. Bailed out his defensive partners as Mavropanos went from faultless to accident waiting to happen in the space of ten minutes.
Scarles:8 Linked well with Paqueta and performed well considering how tricky Leon Baily is. One excellent passage of play saw him cut out a pass expertly then make a defensive header to the acclaim of the loud West Ham away support. Excellent delivery from a corner.
Alvarez:7 Controlled tenacity from a player who clearly knew his role better. Unfortunately his technique let him down on a few occasions but his tackling was great. He must have covered some distance.
Soucek:7 Played his part as the Hammers stopped Villa from having a shot in the first half. Noticeably tried to move the ball more quickly.
Paqueta:6 Shot on goal after 50 seconds went very close. Paqueta didn’t have to wait much longer for his goal as he converted from Summerville’s neat pass after 8 mins. Played very well to begin with but the play-acting resurfaced at precisely the point where Graham Potter’s team began to get fatigued.
Kudus:6 Started the game in a central role. Lovely lofted pass set Summerville free. Had to scrap for everything but far too selfish at times.
Summerville:8 Everyone would have been surprised to see him start on the right hand side and it worked as he set up the Hammers opener. Caused mayhem from his hybrid wing back role. Impressive defending with a tackle on Maatsen. Made a telling clearance from a cross at the end of the first half.
Fulkrug:6 Played his part in the opening goal with a deft flick-on. Had to feel sorry for him as he broke down trying to sprint after 13 mins.
Substitutes
Ings:5 Unexpectedly called upon following what looked like a bad hamstring injury to Fullkrug. Worked his arse off but not really able to impact the game. His moment came in injury time but missed the ball.
Coufal:6 Half time replacement for the excellent Summerville who presumably had an injury. Drew fouls and made a nuisance of himself.
Cresswell: Replaced Scarles after 76 mins once West Ham went 2-1 down.
Soler: On for Mavropanos in 84th min. Crazy attempt late on.
Guilherme: On for Alvarez in a double switch
Very harsh on Fabianski. Deserved at 7 at least.
Once again Ings proved heâs no longer a premiership player. When the keeper spoiled the Kudus shot , the old Ings would have followed up with a tap in. He runs around like a headless chicken offering nothing 1/10 is generous.
I wouldn’t have given Ings 5,he hardly had a touch & fulffed it when he had any opportunities…..
Sorry mate, you are away with the fairies on your ratings, have often thought your overall views of our situation are strange, but cmon mate Danny Ings above our keeper, Stevie Wonder would have observed more than you today, unreal, baffling, surely your judgement cannot be trusted regarding our club
Thats a fair review of players performances. As an AV fan I was more impressed by WHU structure, defensive work and controlled play … only undone in last 20 mins. To a certain extent
a win was not deserved or earned, in this instance we played poorly but got away with it!
You give Paqueta a lower score than Alvarez and Soucek? He contributed more than the two of them put together, including a well-taken goal. And I agree with Andrew, the mark for Fabianski is silly. He parried a well taken shot and was unlucky.
Got to get at least two nĂŠw strikers in after Fuulkrug went of pulling his hamstring. Ings is nowhere near Premiership standard and so bloody slow. Lacks confidence and needs to be replaced.
Summerville was excellent in both attack and defence and shame to see him withdrawn after taking a knock. We definitely lost our attacking impetus when he went off and our lack of decent attacking subs made for a frustrating result.
Ings??? 6??? Doesnât play the odds and gamble on defensive mistakes. On the upside we looked better organised and just need to make that last 90mins⌠or 100 as it seems to be of late.
And a 10/10 for the away support as always âď¸âď¸âď¸âď¸
Away support are massive everywhere they go…
Man of the match performance take a bow Ollie Scarles. Brilliant composed and showed great maturity in his FA Cup debut. Great to hear our fans singing his name and can’t wait to see him flourish under our new manager.
How that could ever be given as a corner is totally beyond me. It never went anywhere near to any of our players.
Wan Bissaka still needs to get back in defence quicker instead of jogging back. Rest of markings near the target. At least we defended well but desperately need a strong reasonably tall young striker or 2. We have the oldest and shortest, less physical squad in the Prem, getting bounced off the ball too easily.
Alvarez 7 ????? U were watching a different game ??
Heâs absolutely hopeless just not quick enough for the premier league !
Iâm so annoyed at potter bringing on Coufel for Summerville – so bloody negative !
Why not move kudos into the Summerville position and bring on Soler into the no 10
You canât sit back and invite pressure and thatâs what that dub did !
Reality is Potter has to get rid of the following as they are all liabilities
Soufel and Cresswell – great servants but not up to premier league now
Malverpronas , Alvarez , Paqueta – the 3 liabilities- all need to be sold asap
Ings – just not interested
Letâs build a hungry young team who want to run, fight and play with passion
Jonathon, you reckon Potter should have left an injured Summerville on then? And you tried twice to spell his replacement’s name but both of your attempts are wrong. It’s COUFAL. Yet you could have read his name in this very article!
!50th birthday present for Villa how he ever thought that was a corner is beyond me, Paqueta should have fought with Konsa instead of going down when there wasn’t VAR then they probably wouldn’t have had such an easy chance.
I thought we played well in the first half considering it was his first game, Scarles was almost flawless, time to bring Kasey in Mavropanos isn’t pl standard. Overall I am encouraged by the performance our passing was noticably better and more progressive, we sat too deep second half and invited our own problems, was a shame what happened to Fullkrug he was causing them problems before his injury.
Overall second half they overpowered us with more physicality that is something Potter needs to address in the window, we look slow and ponderous on the counter Ings is slow, maybe give Guillherme a shot up front or Kudus we need pace and height in the team.
A good start Potter lets hope you cn build on that without the first goal for them I think we might have nicked that COYI !!!!
Ings 6? Youâre having a bubble. Completely anonymous. Offered nothing. Then couldnât even find row z in last minute. 1/10 at best.
Silly mark for Fabianski.
