At last! An international break that means something

|

By Hughie Southon

It’s an awful admission to make maybe but the dreaded international break will supply me with a match which actually interests me.

And that’s probably because it’s a throwback to the days when England v Scotland games were awaited with an anticipation which at the time was beyond words.

It was the keynote game of what were of course known as the Home Internationals which so sadly bit the dustĀ  inĀ 1983.

England meet the Scots on Tuesday night in a game which meant everything to everybody back then.

Who will ever forget the 1977 game at Wembley when the goals were ripped down by fans after a pitch invasion when the visitors had won 2-1?

Goals from Gordon McQueen and Kenny Dalglish with Mick Channon getting England’s from the spot saw Scotland retain the British Home Championship.

The above image – for all the wrongdoing – shows the passion felt by fans at this particular game.

Thankfully there’s only a few fays left of the current one but Tuesday evening will see me fully absorbed.

Come on you England!

Oh, and can we have the Home International Competition back please!
