At last – reasons to hope for ourselves and football

We are going into the 46th day without football and if we are honest the game has become something of an irrelevancy giving the oppressive and fearsome nature of our lives during that time.

However, there may, at last, be signs of hope that we can look forward to a less anxious period ahead and that the players may be returning to training ahead of a possible restart.

  • We can base those hopes on:
  •  deaths in hospitals taking their biggest fall yesterday (Mon) since April 2
  •  new infections tumbling despite more testings across the country
  • and fewer admissions into hospitals nationwide.

The deaths don’t give a true perspective as they are hospital-based only but that they fell by over 200 yesterday is good news even among the biggest pessimists.

West Ham – like every other club – is struggling financially in a big way right now and at some point, the government is set to ease restrictions which could include the possibility of behind closed doors games.

They will also be aware that an anxious and worried population needs some release and that TV sport is a key player in that.

It is understandable that some say football is the last thing in the world on their minds but its return would see a big re-surge in interest and hope that life is normalising.

Obviously, until there’s a vaccine nothing will be at it was!

Having said that it will come as no surprise – should the figures continue to bring hope – that there could be some relaxation of restrictions, maybe even after the weekend according to political ITK Robert Peston.

And that could – again with the aforementioned positions on reducing figures in mind – lead to a three-week ‘pre-season’ from the date of the next government review on May 7.

And that would open up the possibility of an end of May or early June re-start and even more importantly – a far more relaxed atmosphere across the nation.

  1. So there could be lifting of some restrictions after this weekend ? Theyve just put quite rightly in my opinion another 3 week lockdown in place. Are we sure ! A long way to go yet.

  2. Come on guys if you draw a a picture of a say a mound, March on the left side going up represents the start then going up to April it goes up still till it levels (a bit) and so on . When it comes down on the right side I make it September to equal the other side ( being March) ? Major events like Wimbledon have been cancelled and that finishes in mid July? No one knows who was affected by Cheltenham festival and how many people suffered there In March ? And would the government built all these special hospitals like the Nightingale at the EXCEL centre for nothing? This virus is not a quick fix thing??? So football needs to take a back seat for a while IMHO ! Its true WE all miss it but if it does take place it has to be at no risk to the public the players and all the staff involved in organising a game surely? Health and safety before money is what I say because you can’t spend money when you’re dead ?? And to cut to the chase haven’t the NHS already have enough on their plate? Than to worry about more people putting themselves at risk over a football game ?? In the end I’m thinking Lady Brady was right, in her early statement about a null and void season , stay safe every one and after all it’s only a game life is more precious surely

  3. We end the lockdown to soon and we run the risk of a second wave of covid-19 and all the implications that would bring.

    • Yes I think we are all aware of that. However, you may notice the Germans are planning to start their league in a week. There’s a pattern world side of 12 weeks and then great caution

    • Totally agree with rita and Miller…cant believe they are still trying to finish the season..its absolutely ridiculous…and when I see the big clubs are going to lose money it makes me more angry,,we know the money will be a problem but there is more important things to sort out ..wedt ham and the other prem clubs will still be here after all this is finished whatever happens but if you want to talk about devastating effects on clubs its the lower league clubs that will suffer the most the most ..

  4. Are you serious 0 deaths i normally look to you straight away for the hammers news but this report is absolute rubbish mate your stats are all wrong and further more why is everyone pushing for a football return you can’t go it won’t even be on tele .mate this post give me the right hump this morning you are reporting g no deaths yesterday when I woke up this morning breaking news number of deaths hits record high ,stick to football mate not politics

    • It’s a bullet point sign like the other two. Please!!! Stats are from world meters and Government website. The figures you refer to – presumably from the BBC – are ALL deaths from everything and are up to week ending April 10 – 12 days ago. For the last 2/3 days in this country the deaths and infections figures from Covid 19 have fallen significantly per the websites I mention.
