If true, reports that Callum Wilson sees himself as a regular starter for West Ham reveal much about the striker’s mindset.
To say the news of Wilson’s potential arrival at the London Stadium was greeted with a lukewarm response would be something of an understatement. In truth, there’s been a real backlash over the suggestion that the Hammers could soon be signing a 33-year-old with a horrendous injury record.
However, the leaked claim that the former Newcastle man would join West Ham on a pay-as-you-play basis made little sense. After all, Wilson doesn’t play much football and would surely struggle to stay fit—let alone force his way into the starting XI. In essence, no games and no goals mean no wages, so I’m at a loss as to why he’d agree to such terms.
But if the striker genuinely believes he can stay fit and break into the first team, it would explain a lot. To be fair, you have to admire the man’s confidence—particularly given there’s precious little evidence he’s still up to the rigours of Premier League football.
That said, I’m still unconvinced this is a good move—for the player or for West Ham.

I’m convinced more than ever that Sullivan just wants to rile us fans. He either has contempt for us or he has completely lost it. Wilson has been a player on our transfer list season after season and has been beyond what Sullivan has wanted to pay or Wilson just didn’t want to join us. Well now he is on a free he is willing to join, and Sullivan finally gets a player he has stalked for years.
I thought we were after younger hungrier players? We will end up with the oldest team in the prem.
So fed up of all the years of lies and utter mismanagement of this club by this joke of a chairman.
If he plays and doesn’t get a couple of goals quick then he could find a very frosty reception when he plays. I can’t see it going well hope proves us all wrong.

There is nothing about this possible deal that has any value for West Ham at all and Wilson will not be welcomed by the fan base and it will just make Sullivan disliked even more. We need a young striker with pace and they are available without having to stump up crazy money. If Wilson sees himself as a starter at West Ham, I think he’ll have a rude awakening if and when he joins. I’d not be surprised if he hardly features at all but I’m still hoping he goes elsewhere. We don’t want him and we don’t need him.
Him coming is not so much a problem it’s Potter not signing a young experienced goal scorer as well.
Guessand by name scoring is his game.

Maybe our fan base will switch to the West Ham Women’s team!!
Worries me that Potter will be put under pressure to at least put him on the bench perhaps depriving Marshall of valuable experience.

Where’s the progress we seem to be going backwards
Think Callum Wilson is being disrespected quite a bit if I’m honest. Not the player I want to sign but when fit he bangs goals.
Terrible injury record but we’re going on like hes a rubbish player when hes not.
Imo we have no strikers if we sign him on a short term sensible contract for free and have him in the squad its not the end of the world and could provide us some goals when Fulkrug likely gets injured.
The problem we have always made in the past is buying crocked players like Ings for £12m and having him on a silly contract for a number of years and being stuck with them. Callum Wilson on a 1 year deal to add back up when the owners have wasted all of our money, may not be the end of the world.
Out of the 5 years he spent at Newcastle he spent 3 full seasons injured, Fullkrug is likely to be injured less than him. Being disrespected he scored 1 goal last season and 9 the season before, hardly prolific. This would be an utter joke and push many fans over the edge where Sullivan is concerned.
Do you see the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Man. City, Chelsea or any other established Premier League club getting involved in battles over players that are well past their “sell by” date? West Ham are struggling to survive in spite of claims that they are one of only seven PL clubs worth over $1billion, and only four of those finished above WHU last season. Either someone is a master of creative accounting, or the West Ham administration have taken PL club mismanagement to a new level of commercial suicide.
When we were first linked with Wilson, I laughed out loud. Now the reality of yet another abysmal Sullivan signing is rapidly approaching, deep depression has replaced the laughter, while all sense of new season optimism disappears in a puff of smoke.
If by ‘no wages’ you mean the reported 50k per week basic, with huge bonuses on top.
