Balbuena looking for festive pick-me-up

Fabian Balbuena is confident that West Ham can kick off their festive period with a win over Newcastle this weekend.

The defender has been ever present for the Irons thus far this summer, including a goal against Leicester in the 1-1 draw in October.

And Balbuena is sure that he and his team-mates have the required ability to kick off the festive period with three points.

He told the club’s official website: “Of course, we have three games coming up which are important, but first we go to Newcastle trying to get the three points and we have to do that.

“We’ve trained this week with confidence. We need to stay strong and all the guys need to put in a good performance on Saturday.”

The Irons lost 4-0 to Manchester City last weekend, but Balbuena insists there will be no hangover against Rafa Benitez’s men.

He added: “There were many factors in the defeat to Manchester City. They have very good players and they were more effective than us.

“However, we had our chance to win, but we weren’t effective, and I think that was the difference in that game.

“We need to think now about Newcastle, and need to try to get the points that we are losing at home. We have a good team; good players and we have the confidence to win.

“You can see Newcastle are more of a force and they are more dynamic. We need to stay concentrated for 90 minutes.”

The Irons have not won any of their last three visits to St James’ Park.

However, victory this weekend would take the Hammers above the Magpies into 13th in the table.

Newcastle are currently on a three-game unbeaten run and have beaten Watford, Bournemouth and Burnley, with Rafa Benitez turning round a club in desperate need of a sequence of results.
