Baseball returns to West Ham after 83 years

Baseball will return today to a West Ham stadium after an absence of 83 years. Although it is true that the American MLB league has never been played in Europe before nut baseball is no stranger having been played in the mid to late thirties at West Ham’s speedway stadium.

The West Ham baseball company who played in Claret and Blue have later renamed the West Ham Pirates and played the likes of the Romford Wasps and Catford Saints. Baseball in London was shortlived and had disappeared about by the outbreak of the second world war in 1939.

A book at Amazon called British Baseball and the West Ham Club: History of a 1930’s Professional Team in East London explains the full history.

In 1936, the Hammers baseball team defeated the U.S. Olympic team.

Today in the MLB London Series the New York Yankees face the Boston Red Sox in a weekend of two back to back matches.

First pitch is at 6.10 pm this evening.
