Benitez for Irons “a non starter”

|

Most of yesterday – until the Pochettino sacking – centred on the possibility of Rafa Benitez replacing Manuel Pellegrini.

But the reality throughout was that this was a newspaper story based on very little other than second guessing wiithout any supporting evidence.

Rafa Benitez will remain in China where his team has already lost six games and Pelle will remain at the London Stadium unless he can arrest the club’s decline in a hurry.

Sky SportsNews tweeted last night: “No approach has been made to Rafa Benitez about a possible return to the Premier League this season, Sky Sports News understands.”

It wasn’t a hard story to deny and was confirmed by our own source who told us by telephone: “The story simply is a non starter – we haven’t approached anybody or even considered interviews.

Our manager is Manuel Pellegrini – we have no plans to replace him and are looking forward to beating Spurs on Saturday.”

However, there’s some concern that a change of manager could make the difference with him adding: “It changes the nature of the game but there’s a confidence in the squad they can put things right.”
