Ajax winger Steven Bergwijn appears set to depart the club this summer, with West Ham United potentially circling back for his signature, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Romano reports in his Daily Briefing that Ajax’s financial situation makes Bergwijn’s departure “highly likely.” A price tag of around £20 million is mooted, with concrete possibilities of a transfer emerging. However, no official negotiations have begun between clubs yet.

West Ham previously expressed interest in Bergwijn during the January transfer window. With the arrival of new manager Julen Lopetegui, the Hammers might reignite their pursuit. While Romano remains tight-lipped about other potential suitors, he acknowledges Bergwijn’s appeal within the Premier League.

Lopetegui is expected to oversee a significant squad overhaul at West Ham. Strengthening the attacking options is a likely priority, with the overreliance on Jarrod Bowen and Mohammed Kudus a concern. Bergwijn’s experience in the Premier League with Tottenham could be valuable, while his potential availability at a reduced price makes him an attractive target.

There’s no official confirmation yet, but Bergwijn remains a possibility for West Ham. Tim Steidten, the club’s Head of Recruitment, is likely already compiling a transfer shortlist. Bergwijn’s potential and affordability could make him a tempting option for the Irons.
