Tony Cottee reckons the Irons have established he most impressive squad since the turn of the century.
The former striker – speaking in the ClretandHugh interview section of the MooreThanJustAPodcast which goes out early next week: “It is our best squad since the turn of the century.
“Those were the days Jermain Defoe, Joe Cole, Michael Carrick, Paolo Di Canio and John Moncur and I think this one is as good.
“We have four top strikers and I’ve always said you need that many to have a top season. It looks very good.
“When it became obvious Sam Allarydce was leaving I had no second thoughts that Slaven Bilic was the man to take us on.”
Cottee – in his frankest ever interview talks to ClaretandHugh’s associate editor, Sean Whetstone in a not to be missed broadcast.
TC and his legendary striking partner Frank McAvenne – along with other members of the 1986 squad which took the Irons into third place in the old First Division – will be presented to the crowd before the game.
It was in 1986 the Hammers entertained Newcastle at the Boleyn and handed them an 8-1 thrashing.

It is for me the strongest, lets just hope it isnt another ‘squad thats too good to go down’ like it was under Roeder, lol
I think this is the best squad since the turn of the century too. When the nineteenth century became the twentieth century. That is 1900 ish, during the reign of queen Victoria.
Is that the squad at the turn of the century that got us relegated ?
lol I think when we got relegated ( 2003 ), we had already lost a few of those players, but it werent far off it.
It was great to see the video of us thrashing Newcastle 30 years ago and to see Glenn Reoder was as good a player as he was a manager.
I think it is more than this century.
I have never known our squad to contain 25 senior players, let alone a squad completely full of very good quality players ( or anywhere near it ).
It might not be the best first team we have ever had, but I would say it certainly is the best squad we have ever had.
In the sixties we had a squad of about 12 – 13 players plus some reserves ( of dubious quality )
By the eighties the squad had become about 15 strong.
The nineties was not much better.
This is the best it’s been.
Hey Bubs I agree with you, with Lanzini lets wait and see there is an option to buy anyway, Moses, Jenkinson etc good analogy it is effectively and literally 3rd party ownership unless there is an option to buy at market rate or lower installed in a season long contract (or non emergency loan) it shouldn’t be allowed, there is too much loaning going on and players are being bought seemingly with an idea that they can be good loanees generating more return than they are costing which isn’t good for the player or other clubs that don’t have the finances to use that model.
The first time I have agreed with splinter bum for along time,
Now let’s keep it together and watch it grow,
Lanzini needs buying now not next year,
Moses would be good to but he is a money making machine for Chelski in what is now modern slavery, the same as the ownership of South American players which should be stopped
