I was delighted to see Slav find the way forward after half time and for the team to break out of that awful defensive attitude for the first time in a while.
I may have managed only at the lower levels but to be honest it doesn’t matter where you are, football has to be won and the way to do that is to get forward and pressure the opposition. Simple really and we were fabulous in the second half.
We had lost our way a little bit and I understood perfectly why the manager was going down a defensive route with so many injuries but last night he was very very brave and so were the players.
It was fantastic to watch in the second half when our big three were Manu Lanzini, Michail Antonio and Andy Carroll plus the brilliant James Collins at the back.
Maybe it was a blessing in disguise that we went one down because that forced a change of mood and attitude and it was exactly what we’d been crying out for.
Our achievement to be sitting on 29 points is remarkable because we are just three or four games away from safety at the halfway stage – incredible and given this is a new team with a new boss all the more praiseworthy.
I’d seen a fair bit of Michail Antonio in the past and love the kid because although he’s raw, there’s no more willing a player around and he has fantastic pace, power and attitude.
And with the players we have coming back we can start dreaming of Europe again. Perfect end to the New Year – wel done Slav and the boys. Let’s give em hell in the second half of the season.
