Ground of a million memories

It’s almost all over – just 180 minutes of football left at The Boleyn after staging 112 years of football.

But it’s not only the beautful game that will be remembered by many when the final whistle blows on football in Green Street for the final time.

Today we start a series in which ClaretandHugh readers bring their greatest memory of their time as Hammers supporters starting with Christine J Pethers.

Hers is a story of sadness as she recalls her last Dad whose final words involved West Ham United and Upton Park. We are surely going to miss that grand old stadium.

She writes:

” I’ve never ever forgotten sitting in our local hospice as my Dad was leaving us.

On the Saturday around 5 pm he came round ( having been out of it for the previous 36 hours ) and asked us if we’d won and what was the score ?

I have no recollection of who we were playing or whether we had actually won that day , but I’ve never forgotten that moment as it was the last thing Dad said to us and was only with us for another day .”
