Bookies odd tumble on Wilshere

The bookies are convinced Jack Wilshere is on his way to West Ham tonight and have him priced at 1/8 to be wearing the claret and blue next season.

The odds crash is obviously based on reports that the Arsenal free agent has had face to face talks with Manuel Pellegrini. Sky Sports are reporting the story although earlier in the day were saying the Hammers had bid £20 million for Sporting Lisbon’s Bruno Fernandes.

It’s a peculiar one all round given that Wilshere had been previously been rejected as an option by the Hammers going back to last summer when it was rumoured he had asked his agent to move him into the London Stadium.

His prior injury record is such that the club has consistently claimed they can’t afford a gamble of another Andy Carroll scenario where agents played a large part in the move.

There have been mentions of him having had a “huge offer” from Fenerbache. Given that £100k a week wasn’t enough to keep him at Arsenal one wonders how the Turks could top that.

And with one report saying the Hammers are coming back with an improved offer one has to ask how much are the Hammers prepared to fork out. I don’t think we should be rushing out to grab 1/8 at the moment.

  1. I’ve read elsewhere that 100k a week wasn’t enough to keep him at Arsenal because not only would it have been a drop from the reported 130k that he had been on up till then but also because Unai Emery couldn’t promise he would be an integral part of the team or guarantee him future playing time. So if there is any truth in the fact most of the media world seems to want to sell Wilshere to West Ham on a free transfer and 90-100k a week wages then he would presumably be taking a big reduction in pay in order to get the playing time he desires. He has been injury prone in the past but I don’t see it as a huge risk mainly as he would be a free transfer. Yes it could go pear shaped I suppose as things often do with West Ham as we know, but A free transfer. A free transfer with a point to prove to Arsenal, to England and who knows, maybe the world.

  2. £50k per week basic + pay as you play

  3. Imho he is the best English midfielder when fit, the only one that regularly unlocks defences, if he was at the World Cup now we would have a better chance against Sweden and would have beaten Columbia more convincingly.

  4. I think he is a good signing but they are only going back for him as we have failed with all our major target’s..that’s worrying…

  5. It seems we’re going back for him because Pellegrini has said he wants him. Major targets have not been named officially by the club so the majority of them are pure speculation on the part of the press. Be fair how could we possibly be chasing that many players? It’s ridiculous.
