Speaking to BT Sport about the Olympic Stadium capacity Baroness Brady said:
“Well it is 54,000 but we are looking to take it 60,000 because demand for season tickets has been so high because we now have several times as many people wanting season tickets than we can actually fulfil the demand so we are looking at increasing the capacity”
Yesterday ClaretandHugh revealed up to 15,000 people on the West Ham priority waiting list may be in for a big disappointment next year as demand is outstripping the number of seats at the new stadium.
Brady previously suggested increasing capacity to 66,000 earlier this year. She said:
“It would certainly seem the interest is there, we have to look at the logistics of it because these would be the seats furthest from the pitch, so we have to make sure they are worth having. There is no point sticking someone in a corner with a poor view. But if the sight lines are still good, we could fit in 66,000. It’s a very exciting prospect.”
At the moment planning permission and the safety certificate restricts capacity to 54,000 for the Hammers although interestingly if any other football game is played there, such as a Champions League final or an international fixture, the capacity increases to 60,000.
An increase in capacity to 60,000 would put the club ahead of Manchester City, whose recently expanded Etihad stadium now holds 55,000 fans, and match the Emirates (Arsenal), which has a capacity of 60,000. Even Spurs’ and Chelsea’s new stadiums will hold 60,000.
