Brave Hammers beaten

A spirited West Ham side were ultimately beaten 2-1 by Tottenham in the EFL Cup quarter-final on Wednesday.

The Hammers went into the game hoping to repeat their heroics against both Manchester United and Manchester City but were beaten by Antonio Conte’s side.

The majority of the key events in the game came in a remarkable first half that, at times, resembled a basketball game such was its end-to-end nature.

Spurs actually took the lead through Steven Bergwijn on 28 minutes, as he poked the ball home after a neat one-two with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the penalty area. Questions will be asked as to how the two players had the space they did in the Hammers box.

But the Irons responded with a flurry of chances, bringing Hugo Lloris into the game, with the Frenchman twice saving well from Tomas Soucek headers.

And the Irons did hit back just after the half-hour mark; Spurs lost the ball and a Nikola Vlasic shot found Jarrod Bowen, who managed to twist in the area and turn Eric Dier inside out before finishing brilliantly.

Parity did not last long, however, and Spurs scored the winner in the 33rd minute; Bergwijn managed to dribble through a crowd of West Ham players before finding Lucas in the box, who was alert to poke the ball under Alphonse Areola.

Just two minutes later, it looked as though the Hammers had an ideal chance to level, as Soucek stretched to reach a cross at the back post but Oliver Skipp somehow diverted the ball past the post and out for a corner.

Spurs managed to see the game out in the second half but that’s not to say there weren’t chances for the Irons. Bowen perhaps came closest when Manuel Lanzini released him with a brilliant ball over the top but Lloris was quick to rush off his line and palm the ball away at his feet.

Andriy Yarmolenko actually had hearts in mouths in injury time when his shot was deflected onto the crossbar.

The Hammers fall.

  1. Unsurprising result , given that Spuds had a 2 week break and a back line that cost more than West Hams entire team, which included just 3 first team starters…..good performance and great entertaining game though!
