Following on from the earlier article on Mikey Antonio’s gym photo and the welcome sight of him evidently back in training, we’ve a supremely important piece of news to report on the Hammers’ number nine in his battle to regain fitness.

Antonio was seriously injured in December – around eight weeks ago – and sustained a leg fracture that required surgery: Until the image earlier today all West Ham fans had seen of the striker was a picture of him leaving hospital on crutches. The news and image of Antonio back in the gym prompted Claret and Hugh associate editor Sean Whetstone to ask our highly placed source inside the club about Antonio’s contract – would he be offered a 12 month extension to his deal or perhaps a pay-as-he-plays deal?

The response we got back was, frankly, staggering! :“Who knows, he might play before the season ends. There is a small chance”.

Wonderful news that Antonio is on the mend – and might just make it back this season – in true ‘Kammy’ lingo –That’s unbelievable Jeff!

After surgery just eight weeks ago, to think that West Ham’s leading all time goal scorer might be back in action before the end of this season is absolutely stunning: Two months ago he was in intensive care. And to think in three months’ time he might be running out at London Stadium with the number 9 on his back again – astounding.

We cannot wait.

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970.. Don't take my comments too seriously, imagine we are having a chat at half time over a pint at L S and "let's disagree without falling out".

It would be great for Antonio to come on as a late, late sub in the final home game, as that is likely all we’ll see of him in Claret n Blue.
Been a great West Ham player, one of my favourites over recent years, and wish him all the best.

He might be 34 but he is low mileage. Another couple of years of useful service beckons.

He’s very fortunate to have survived and I wish him well, but an extension to his contract after an Injury like that at 35? No chance.

BTW he is our Premier League top goalscorer with 68 but nowhere near our all time top goalscorer. That honour belongs to Vic Watson who scored an incredible 326 goals from 1920 to 1935. He once scored 6 in one game in a 8-2 win against Leeds, and cost £50 from Wellingborough. Best £50 we ever spent!

As previously mentioned Antonio’s age is against him and a new contract is a foolish waste of money. That being said good luck to Antonio and best wishes to a full recovery.

Great news, but again Vic Watson is our all time leading scorer

  • John Ayris says:

It’s great that he’s on the mend and if he plays before the end of the season better still, but surely at 35 he’s over the top for this level now.

Great news for Antonio , however he’ll be 35 and will cost another 5 million to renew his contract .. No room for passengers at Westham because of the incompetent transfer regime over the last few years which has wasted 100’s of millions and also failure to sign great players because of Moyes old fashioned approach and bad ‘hunches’ ( Gyrokeres ) .
