Brentford and West Ham battled to a 1-1 draw in an intense Premier League London derby this afternoon, providing Hammers manager Julen Lopetegui with some valuable breathing space.
The match started in the worst possible way for the Hammers, as Brentford took the lead within the first minute with Bryan Mbeumo’s brilliant volley finding the back of the net.
It was déjà vu for West Ham, who seem to have a nasty habit of surrendering their advantage to the opposition. This was the worst possible scenario for Lopetegui, who has faced intense pressure since the Irons’ 5-1 loss to Liverpool on Wednesday.
However, his players’ response will please the Spaniard, who can now look to refine his tactics ahead of next week’s clash against Ipswich.
Lopetegui made decisive changes at halftime, including the substitution of Mohammed Kudus, which left many scratching their heads. However, Brentford saw their lead slip away in the 54th minute when Tomas Soucek managed to scramble the ball over the line, levelling the score for West Ham at 1-1. It’s fair to say that a point was a deserved result for both teams.
The Hammers finished the game strongly, and it was encouraging to see Lopetegui urging his team forward until the end. The performance was far from perfect, but the Spaniard was proactive with his substitutions, and his team finished stronger.
While it has been a tough week for the Irons’ boss, he can at least prepare for Ipswich without the immediate threat of losing his job hanging over his head. It’s early days, of course, but he’ll hope the green shoots of recovery have started.
Thank God for Souchek. Where would we be without him.
