Brentford 2-0 West Ham Player Ratings by Gonzo

Fabianski:7 Could have done much better for the opening goal. Made an excellent double save from a goal-mouth scramble. Wonderful save on the 93rd min.

Johnson:6 Early slip allowed Brentford an attack. A mixed performance from Johnson with some good and some bad. At least demonstrated some desire. Had West Ham’s third shot of the game following a nice pass from Mubama.

Aguerd:3 Awful pass to Downes saw him repeat a previous error when he foolishly put Soucek in trouble. Partly culpable for the second goal too,

Ogbonna:6 Had a lot to do as West Ham invited Brentford to attack.  Great block stopped a Bees third.

Emerson:6 Cut inside and had a weak shot but it was West Ham’s only effort in the first half hour. Vital goal-line block on 40 mins.

Brentford 2-0 West Ham

Soucek:4 Sat in front of the Hammers defence as we allowed Brentford to control possession. Terrible pass almost gifted Wissa another goal.

Downes:5 Easy day at the office for Downes until Aguerd gave him a hospital pass which saw West Ham go a goal behind. Too slow to release the ball on occasion.

Lanzini:6 Given his favoured role but never made the Hammers tick. Looked rusty and unfit as did half of the team. Should have been credited an assist for the disallowed Ings goal. Looked much better with Rice in the team.

Fornals:3 Lacked the dynamism to really impact the game against an energetic team. Poor Fornals was awful and repeatedly struggled with his first touch and passes.

Cornet:2 Looked rusty and lacking match sharpness as you’d expect. Made no impression at all.

Ings:5 Given the sacrificial lamb role up front in this West Ham reserve team. Sometimes played on the left but not really effective in either role. Looked far happier with Mubama beside him. Good positioning for his ruled-out goal.

Benrahma: Part of a triple sub on 58 mins saw him replace Fornals much better than Cornet but had a chance and shot tamely.

Mubama: Replaced Cornet. Delighted for the lad. Unlucky with a handball decision.

Rice: On for Soucek and made a difference.

Bowen: 82nd min sub for Ings

    Here are my ratings:-

Fabianski, 6. Time for Areola to finally step up next season.
Johnson 6. Lacking match fitness, and it shows.
Aguerd 5. Not his finest outing for us. Oh well, there’s another one coming on Thursday.
Ogbonna 7. Hardly ever has a bad game – shame he’s nearly 35.
Emerson 6. Tidy enough. Normally links well with Benrahma who didn’t start.
Downes 4. Will never ever be good enough to play for a decent Prem team. He must go.
Soucek 5. The fittest player in our squad, but it hasn’t been evident lately. Missed Rice.
Cornet 4. No match fitness yet after a long time out. Roll on next season.
Lanzini 6. Another lacking sharpness. The arrival of Paqueta has limited his game time.
Fornals 4. Was he on the pitch then? Normally more effective than this.
Ings 5. His ‘goal’ should’ve been allowed. Always looks better with a strike partner.

Subs – 5 each. Rice – should’ve replace the crablike Downes. Benrahma – should’ve started against his old team (though I get why he didn’t.) Mubuma – will surely get another run out as sub soon. Bowen – too late to be effective.

***As soon as I saw the line up that Moyes had selected, I knew how the game would go. Would’ve been better to have started with a stronger team, introducing subs at half time or on the hour just to give minutes to as many as possible. Had Moyes done that, West Ham might not have been two down at half time.***

Soucek – awful ball control no amount of training can rectify that – Ogbonna is like a fine wine I love watching this geezer. The ridiculous and the sublime.

Expected a poor performance, and got one!
Stating that Rice made others look better is a bit obvious, but that is why he’s a £100mil.+ player and future England Captain!

They looked like they were dreaming of cocktails in the sun.

Our squad players didn’t take the chance the manager gave them. Lanzini, Downes, Cornet contributed very little. So much for the idea of squad rotation. And what has happened to Fornals?

Over generous with the points…truly a pathetic performance.

But of a nothing game really since all the focus is on the European trip on Thursday. I wasn’t particularly expecting much from this game or particularly bothered about it if I’m quite honest, however an excellent opportunity for the B team players to show why they should be in the A team. A shame then that none of them really showed up.

I can’t think of a professional footballer who has worse ball control than Fornals. That corner into the side netting says it all. Even 3 is too generous. Downes was also very poor: he’s such a passive player and always seems a step behind.
