Brentford 3 – 0 West Ham United | Player ratings as Hammers capitulate

West Ham went behind early on to a Mavropanos own goal as the Greek tried in vain to toe the ball over the bar in a first half which saw the Hammers have an equaliser chalked off by VAR and Castellanos hit the woodwork three times.

The game seemed over at 55 minutes and West Ham fell flat and defeated after a pointless lunge from Diouf gave away a naive penalty which Thiago duly converted. Nuno livened it up with Traore, Wilson and Wan Bissaka introduced to no avail: Brentford broke through West Ham’s rearranged defence for a third and it was game over for the Irons today.

Hermansen 3 One mad rush of blood saw him stranded near the half way line after failing to head clear a Brentford through ball. Blushes spared by an inaccurate shot from Daamsgaard. Went the wrong way for Thiago’s spot kick. Should have got down better for Brentford’s third which slid under his outstretched hand. Poor game. Areola incoming.

Walker Peters  6 Decent enough first half without threatening going forward. Subbed on 64 after an ‘ok’ game

Disasi 6 Competent as always first half performance. Defended well enough and kept Brentford’s attack quiet but with Diouf’s kamikaze lunge to give away a pointless penalty, even Disasi was powerless to rescue the Hammers’ cause.

Mavropanos 6 Unlucky to concede an own goal and then even more so to have his bullet header chalked off by VAR as his elbow was apparently offside. Helpless to stop Brentford’s second half dominance especially as he and Disasi had to reshape a defence with three centre backs late on.

Diouf 4 Brilliant free kick cross for West Ham’s disallowed goal and looked threatening with those curling crosses throughout the first half. Dreadful, naive dive lunge in to block a cross to give away a penalty early on in the second half, totally unnecessary. Substituted for Traore on 73′.

Soucek 5 Invisible first half. Rugby tackled by Lewis Potter in the box from a West Ham corner which went unpunished. Grew into the second half and battled away but to little avail. His last minute wild shot from 30 yards went about 30 yards over and summed up the Hammers’ afternoon.

Fernandes 6 Hustled throughout the first half and one committed battling run set up a Summerville near miss. Overrun in the second half and at times he and Soucek struggled today.

Summerville 6 Poor defending contributed to Brentford’s opener: Several excellent trademark runs and fired over late on in the first half. In the book for a horrible late lunge after the Hammers were 2-0 down. Squared up to Jensen when on a yellow card after having his shirt pulled – sensibly Nuno subbed him for Scarles on 86.

Castellanos 7 Incredibly first half with three strikes of the wood work – could have easily had a hat trick inside the first ’45. Booked through frustration in the second half after a late lunge. Withdrawn on 64 for Callum Wilson: Why?

Pablo 2 Inexplicably failed to shoot when through on goal early on. Pressed and harried well in first ’45. still looks like he’s completely out of his depth when going forward. Once again Nuno took off the wrong forward when he left Pablo on but withdrew Taty.. Wiped out in the ‘box on 77 minutes but inexplicably the Hammers didn’t receive the penalty the challenge deserved. Dreadful studs up challenge after 85 for which he should really have been red carded.

Bowen 4 Quiet first half with one trademark cut-inside -and – shoot which landed tamely in Kelleher’s gloves. Poor in second half without  really getting involved. So far below par this afternoon but looked more involved as Nuno moved him inside for the last 15. Subbed for Magassa on 86.

Subs:

Wilson for Castellanos  64′

Wan Bissaka 3 for Walker Peters on 64′ Nasty clash of heads straight up. Dropped into a centre back role when Traore arrived. Terrible switch off for Brentford’s third, merely strolling around without challenging. Rusty or couldn’t be bothered, I wonder.

Traore on for Diouf 73′. Couple of good runs.

Scarles for Summerville 86 Yellow carded in added time chasing back to stop Kayode.

Magassa for Bowen 86

From the old Bobby Moore Upper to the Billy Bonds' stand these days - sometimes- have to admit I have not renewed my season ticket... I've been watching since '03 and a supporter since about 1970..
Favourite player - Dean Ashton: Still watch YouTube repeats of the Cup Final of 2006 hoping in vain that Shaka Hislop grows six inches and stops Steven Gerrard's injury time equaliser. Can tell I'm getting old knowing I saw both Mark Noble's debut and his last game at West Ham.
Pulling on a Claret and Blue replica shirt still makes me feel the same butterflies as when I was seven years old. Magic.

Usual ref moaners, yes we did hit the woodwork a few times but it might as well have been the corner post, means the same thing NO GOALS ! Don’t really see where the next points are coming from, less than average performance from a poor team who should have absolutely no complaints if they go down, exposing just how frail the set up this club is , ” Next level ” my foot, unless of course they meant the championship all along……..

Didn’t get to see the game but the highlights make Brentford look lucky. We hit the woodwork 4 times have a goal ruled out by var for off side by an elbow (Didn’t know you could score with your elbow) and their first goal was a foul on Mav. with possible dangerous play. Even if the whole game Brentford were better than us they shouldn’t be 3 goals better.

After 1 point from those 4 Xmas/New Year games convinced me were down, however, our performances since Paqueta left/Coach arrived/January signings have made it worth while watching the boys again, and the run since then has shown we are a top 10 side—now…. but is it too late ?

Aa for this game, our play until Diouf lunged was great, and had it not been for the woodwork and referee, it would have been a Brentford capitulation

As for Hermansen 3…. shame you were not watching the game Martin

I suspect this post will be ignored as others I’ve made have been

I was more surprised about the manner of the defeat given our situation. No real fight and I don’t mean late tackles when the game is already lost. Fernandez turned his back for the 3rd goal which is indefensible. 3-0 is an awful result and so bad for confidence and morale. We are now relying on Spurs not to win tomorrow and next up is Arsenal! It doesn’t get any easier

  • George Howell says:

We are not good enough for the PL, and 3-0 is a bit of a stuffing against a middling side. Would expect a closer call in the circumstances. It’s a case of whether there are three worse teams again, and all depends on whether or not Spurs can pull themselves up by the bootstraps. If we go down then the board has to remove Sullivan from any decision making on the football side, if not we could be down for a long time.

  • Graham Skeet says:

Taty hit woidwork twice not 3 times. Summerville hit bar in second half. Just for the record.

  • Martyn says:

Yep table doesn’t lie we have been poor team all season and championship is calling. I live in hope but don’t see us winning any more this season, feels like goodnight Vienna !
Even if we stay up I see us in the same position next season, and if we go down I’m not convinced we will get back in a hurry.

  • DJHammer says:

    Disappointed, yes.
    Downhearted, no way.
Very spirited performance, how unlucky to hit the woodwork thrice and have a goal disallowed for having too much mass on your shoulder!
It!s not over, until it’s over sang Lenny Kravitz.
We will prevail and must not give in to negativity.
For all we know, we may well already have secured enough points.
Chill out, relax and let’s wait for the remaining games to be completed before reaching for the tiny violin.

I think u watched a diff game to me the ref never gave us anything u must be joking bringing areola back a bit more belief please taty could have scored a hat trick a margi al offside i thought thomas played well onto the next and come on villa

  • Sue says:

Very disappointing just lack the quality of a descent striker to put chances away. First half good but just lost it and beaten by a far better team. Unfortunately if Spurs win tomorrow I can not see us winning any of our final 3 games. We can not rely on teams loosing for us to stay up. We need a miracle now and I hate to say we have just not been good enough this year, so if we are relegated it is the lack of quality in the team
Great shame, but always a hammer

  • Den says:

Diouf lost us any hope of getting points today. His thinks he is better than he is. While he gets his big move next season we will be playing lincoln city so what does he care!
As for Bowen he is no England player..was barely seen today and he is supposed to be the club captain. Remember the time when he got the ball on his left foot and we stood in anticipation..now when Bowen gets the ball i sigh and wait for the goal kick or he gives the ball away with an impossible pass.
Lets not mention Pablo who lets be honest would not get anywhere near the first team of any other prem club.
See you in all in the championship!

  • George says:

Hermansen? 3. I do wonder if you watched the game most weeks.

  • Jeff says:

Was Pablo red carded??? Must have missed that!

    • Martin Treasure says:

nope, indeed, I was anticipating it lol.. cannot believe he stayed on to be honest, watch it tonight and judge for yourself..

      • Jeff says:

It sounded like it could, maybe should, have been red..according to match report, he wasn’t even booked..be interesting to see it later

  • Essexiron67 says:

Played awful, hit the Woodward 3 times possible penalties not given , could have got something out of the game but wasn’t going happen. Agreed why not take Pablo off, can’t understand why kante isn’t playing looks capable when he gets his chance . Maybe tate was likely to get carded again but would have liked him to have stayed on . I don’t believe we have enough creativity in midfield, fernandes seems to play to far back and unable to create anything. Come on villa.

  • ricardo says:

A poor team performance, few ideas, lack of precision and confidence, subs way too late. Maybe Kante and Lamadrid should have gotten a go? How Bowen‘s inspired performances of the past are really missed…
